SpySheriff infection, maybe others

I got this nasty fake-spyware program on my comp. I thought again my brother was responsible, but it turns out no. I was in the other room, and suddenly my screensaver turned off, and I saw the blue glow of my hijacked desktop background. Which makes me think its some sort of virus or an agent of another spyware, since its installing itself when the computer is not in use. I tried uninstalling it, and deleting its directory and installation executable, then got a registry file to be able to change my desktop again, but it came back.

Also, when I my computer booted up, I got a popup dialogue box with a bunch of ??? marks in it, and I just hit OK or whatever to get it down.

Any idea how I could have gotten this? I run Spybot SD and Adaware every day, have Spyware Blaster, Norton AV, use Firefox, have your recommended security settings, and don't visit mallacious/porn/warez sites (as far as I know, but I've changed my login password so my brother can't use my comp, if it was in fact he who got the malware). Thanks.

    Are you familiar with this batch file?

    O4 - Global Startup: login.bat
  • edited June 2005
    That file seems to have been in my HJT logs before I got the current infection, so I don't think that is causing the problem. However, I'm going to try what was recommended in this thread
    http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33702
    tommorrow and see if it works.

    Ok, still have SpySheriff. Can't seem to get rid of it! I came home from work and it once again had reinstalled itself.

    You will want to print out these instructions as you will need to close all Windows later in this fix.

    Please download and install Cleanup 4.0, but do not run it yet.
    http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

    Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    1. Install Ewido security suite
    2. Launch Ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    3. The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
    4. The program will now go to the main screen
    5. On the left hand side of the main screen click on Update
    6. Click on Start. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

    After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

    ================

    Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE

    ================

    Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

    1. Click Options...
    2. Move the arrow down to Custom CleanUp!
    3. Put a check next to the following:

    Sorry I haven't gotten back about this.
    I tried everything that was said, couldn't fix it... and I had some CWS that CWShredder didn't get rid of, and I decided to reformat rather than continue tinkering. I hope this does manage to help the next unlucky soul that gets infected with this pervasive malware.
