Ok I am building a system for my sister and she wants an LCD screen since she will be in a dorm room. I have never bought an LCD screen before and am not sure whats the best out there.

I was looking at a few from newegg:

CMV CT-522A Black 15" 16ms LCD Monitor - Retail
ViewSonic VE500 Metallic on Black 15" 16ms LCD Monitor - Retail
PHILIPS 150S5FB/27 Black 15" 16ms LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 450:1 0.297mm Pixel Pitch - Retail

I have never heard of CMV before but it has some nice reviews. It has the best viewing angle of the 3. It also has the best contrast ratio as well.

Anyone have any comments on 15" LCDs, it doesnt have to be on one of these 3. I am still open.

even if conserving space is a necessity, a 17" lcd will still fit. granted, I'm not sure she'd notice the difference...

btw, I'll always go with a trusted brand like Viewsonic over one I've never heard of

Hmm I was going to say that price is a main choice in some of the decisions but 17" LCDs are not that much more than 15" LCDs.

Yea I was lucky enough to be at bestbuy on a one day sale they had, and I picked up a 19" samsung lcd marked down to $200 from $400. 50% off, it was my lucky day :D

BTW check out bestbuy, they've started selling lcd monitors alot cheaper than previously. I've seen 15" monitors there for $200 and less, and 17" for less than $250

Newegg is much cheaper for about any computer related part. A nice 17" LCD is $199 and shipping is less than the tax you would pay at BB.

And I just ordered the CMV LCD since it had speakers built into the monitor. Space is an issue I guess and she didnt want something that took up a lot of deskspace.

As long as the LCD monitor works and you can see a picture, who cares what brand it is. Short of your sister using it for monitor-stressful programs (which I have no idea really exists, but for basic functions, anything should do). I have a Samsung 175v 17", my dad has a Samsung 712n, and the family room has a Benq 17" LCD monitor. All of them work, the Benq was cheapest at $179 (the others were 279 and 249, respectively).

IMO, monitors are the one thing I will easily buy at a big retailer. Even though it may be cheaper on newegg, it's not that much cheaper and if the thing goes bust within a week, all ya gotta do is run back and get another. With newegg, you'd have to pay shipping, wait, wait, and wait. To me, it's worth the extra 20 bucks or so.

She wont be doing anything stressful with the computer. Office, IM, browsing and some other light stuff.
