System Meltdown Need Responses Fast

edited June 2005 in Hardware
i was surfing the web the other day and all of a sudden i hear this noise like a "boooinnngg" (like a spring). It was quiet and almost discreet at first and then as i tried to move my pointer to hit back or click out or anything it moved in slow motion across the page and nothing responded. At that piont I knew i got a virus somehow and i didn't click on anything so i panicked and shut down my computer. When i turned it back on WIN 98 my OS never started up and it eventually said OS not found. The only solution to this problem would be to reformat my hard drive but i would need a boot disk. I just recently downloaded a bootdisk from the bootdisk.com website but that was little help because i could not figure out how to complete the steps after that.

    First get Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/get.php)
Then boot that straight off the CD. You should be able to mount your windows drive with the command
    mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1

You should then see the contents of your C:\ drive in /mnt/hda1. You can use this to FTP your important files across to another machine, or what have you. :)

Then one you have done that you should reinstall windows, using the bootable windows install disk.
