Got Java/byte Verify Virus

I'm The New Kid (hmmm) On The Block. Very Hesitant To Post Here As I Am Technically Way Out Of My Depth. However, Found An Old Post (dec 04) With Problem Very Similar To Mine. All Details Identical, In Fact Ie. Avg Detects Virus But Doesn't Inform Or Destroy (i Wouldn't Have Known At All But For Sending An Attachment To My Daughter Who Email'd Me Back Saying I'm Infected) My Pc Doesn't Seem To Recognize It. Avg Showed Clean Tests Until June 1 Thru 8, Then Appears Clean Again. Infected Files Are Not Showing Up On Test Results. The Previous Member Showed Documentation Of His Pc's Files. Don't Know How To Do This. Sorry For Being Backward But If Someone Cares To Help Me With This, I'd Really Appreciate It. We Have No Apparent Problems Yet But I Don't Want To Give It A Chance. Thanks In Advance

No problem, we are here to help. :)

Look near the top of this page. You will see big red letters that say:

Before posting logs, please read the following threads:

Under that is a link that says:

Steps To Take Before Posting a Hijack This Log

Click on that link there, or just click on the link that I just gave here. (Any text in the teal green colour here is a link.)

The first post on that page tells you how to run some standard anti-spyware apps on your computer.

The second post on that page tells you how to run Hijack This (known as HJT) which is the program that creates the log file you have seen posted on other threads.

Follow those 2 steps. Post your HJT log back here in this thread (it is a good idea to add this thread to your Favorites/Bookmarks so that you can come back to it easily later.) After you post the HJT log here, I will get an e-mail telling me that you have responded. I will come help you as soon as I am able to.

Be patient, follow our instructions carefully, and we will get you sorted out. We help hundreds of people every month here, many of them with very little computer knowledge. If you have any questions along the way, just ask right in this thread, and we'll help you out. :)

    Dexter...

Many thanks, Dexter. It sounds like a wait-til-tomorrow job. Will try then,

Again, really liking this website. Smart AND frieeendlyy. Love it. :)

Now... I have performed steps 1 & 2, Spyware programs are downloaded and have been run the past 2 days, each time finding & destroying 60ish bad guys. Today, only 1. However, it takes over an hour to accomplish the shutdown/disable system backup/run Spybot/restart/run Adaware/reenable system backup. Am I crazy or is this a lot of carry-on just to check my email and see what's happening in the bank account? Is there something I can download that kills 'em off as they show up?

Second, I am unsure how to proceed with the Hijack thing (open its own file, drag and drop, etc.) so have not done this. Another site discussing the Java/Bye Trojan suggests going into Start then Settings>Control Panel>Java Plugs>Cache>Clear. Hunt as I may, I cannot get past the Start bit: where is "settings"? I run WindowsXP. Should I even try it?

Third, having read to the end of the Before You Post instructions, I acknowledge that I am behooved to get smarter about my PC. Any recommendations as to a good general ref book - sort of the Joy of Cooking for PC owners?? You give great instruction online but once I'm away from the site, it's hard to remember all the detail when it comes time to perform.

Am very aware of the length here so will say a large THANKYOU and sign off.

We really need to see a hijackthis log in order to help you. It's a simple process. Instructions are here.

Hi, Buckeye Sam, or anyone else that cares to jump in,

    Thanks for your reply.

All due respect of course, but "simple" is a relative thing .... I am unsure how to carry out these instructions. I realize it's very elementary to you but even copy and paste is Greek to me. Sorry, I know you are way beyond this sort of thing but I am willing to learn.

So I went into My Documents and created a new file but I have a feeling it's not going to do it. I have sort of downloaded Hijackthis, it shows a zippered file and asks if I want to run the program. But I need to do the browse and drag thing first...if you could walk me through it. Little step by little step. My thanks, Rose

    P.S.
I have since run Spybot S&D and Adaware. Both results clear. (BTW, while Spybot was scanning, I saw some very quick but unmistakably porn-site looking names. Does that mean someone has actually been accessing these sites from my pc or could it be the result of outside influences?) Just in case..... I did find the internet control settings options and tightened 'em right up.

I have also moved the HJT file to, I think, the right place and will run the log again. Thanks in the extreme for your patience and help. Rose

Good job Rose. That's perfect! Don't worry about what you saw when Spybot was running. That wasn't what it was seeing on your computer, but rather what it was looking for. If it came up clean then you have no worries.

Your log looks clean to me. I'm a little confused about what problems you are actually having. While AVG is a very good antivirus program it's still a good idea from time to time to get a second and third opinion. The best way to do that is to run a few free online virus scans.

Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically

    Panda Virus Scan

    Bit Defender

    TrendMicro Housecall

There may be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scans.
