I have an NF7-S rev2.
Is it safe to update the bios using the Abit Flashmenu in Windows?

Well... It seemed to work fine, except I had to go in and change all the settings back.

Aye. Because it resets the BIOS for you, as you should be doing when you flash from DOS. :)

It works just fine. The motherboard manufacturers (the major ones anyway) are getting more reliable at the Plug&Play type updating like that...

I just used it to upgrade my NF7-S and it worked like a champ!

Off topic though. I went from bios 14 to 18 and my CPU temp increased by 5.5 deg C. When I ran the original bios and 14 I checked teh temps with a probe and found the ones reported with bios 14 to be correct. So what is Abit trying to tell us? Are they actually trying to match the on chip temp or what?

    I have used it 3 times now on a 1.2 and a 2.0. Works like a charm.

One recommendation though, especially if you are flashing back to older bios. If you have a feature enabled on a new bios and that feature isn´t even in the older bios, make sure to disable it before the flash. You might see strange things if you dont.

On the 2.0 version and if you are into overclocking, i can highly recommend the first bios, bios 10.

Just used the version 1.3 that Equito just linked to and flashed my NF7-S 2.0 from 1.6 to 1.8. Everything went fine.:D

thanks for the link - I've got a whole farm to update and this is perfect since I'm lacking floppy drives in every rig :D

FYI: there are issues with this new version and some boards but don't worry, it won't mess up your bios.
It'll just give you an error about not being Award bios if you do the web update.
Solution: download the bios file to the HD and update from there.

    Good luck!

I haven't looked at the instructions yet. What do I do to start? Besides this proggy I have to download the latest bios for each board or what.

    I have KT7A-R, KX7 and KX7-R, AT7, KD7 and KD7-R

No instructions to look at really.
Basically, you have two choices: One Click LiveUpdate or Update From File, choose from file, browse to the directory containing the new .bin file and voila!
Yeah, you need to download and unzip it first if you choose from file.

I just used it for my Abit NF7-S v1.
    It worked fine.

Btw, I have several different kinds of mobos, and all I've ever used to flash the bios, are the live update programs. So far they haven't let me down.

If you guys know of one for MSI, let me know.
I have an MSI board that has a defective floppy IDE port.

You can always boot from a Flash drive and flash the BIOS from there (depending on if your Mobo supports USB MSD's in the BIOS).

You could also use a boot CD and burn the BIOS update to a RW-CD and use that.

NS, I don't have Flash drive, although I wish I did.
Maybe it's something to consider in the future.

..and if you're talking about buring .iso's, I haven't had much luck doing that.

    Check out this guide..

Substitute your own BIOS for the crappy DELL one. The principle and use of this guide is just the same :)

    http://www.bay-wolf.com/bootcd.htm

Has instructions for both Nero 5.5 and 6 :)

Say Shorty, that MSI Live Update installs Live Monitor, and that checks for the lastest bios. Then it takes you to a download page, but it says it's a DOS flash, and needs a floppy. :(
The Windows selector is grayed out.

I did get the latest version of Fuzzy Logic and PC Alert and the latest drivers for the board, through the update program, though.

Equito: I have a barton xp2500 in a KD7 with the CY bios. 2308mhz 12X192 set to 1.90v in bios with MBM5 reading 1.90 idle and 1.86 under load. Idle temp was 52 and load was 59. Now after flashing to EN bios idle is 37 and load is still 59. Is this from that old register trick about the "halt" thing and is it ok to leave it like this? Is it editable in the new bios?

    Damn :(

If you can tell me exactly what BIOS and so that you need.. Il build you a bootable .ISO that you can just burn to CD :)

    Ok, I need MS-6712 1.90

That's kind of sad. Even that one is from March, I think.
I need to think about upgrading some of these things.

Sorry forgot to add- that's a AMIbios for MSI KT3V
