Recomend me a system...

2, possibly 3 months from now(very likely 2, possibly less even). I am unsure when this new NVidia card comes out I just finished the 28 page review at guru3d hoping I'd figure it out. Doesn't matter really though for this.

Graphics card aside I want you to help me build a new computer for $1000 and I hope that's enough because I'll be spending extra on a new card when I can. I gots me sum xtra moola!

I have a couple ideas for this.

1) UBER, fast, overclocked, loud or water cooled?

2) Small, but still speedy. More portable. Small form factor like them shuttle's.

No matter what, I want something that will play GREAT. 2GB of memory, dual CPU or dual core. And as I said, I might be buying a new card too, I was thinking of the new NVidia card.

I went watercooling and my cpu temp is exactly the same and my sys temp is a little higher. Besides you're considering the tight mini case ...get a good aircooler like thermalright instead. The newer 90nm chips run way cooler also and with a great heatsink you don't need a noisy fan.
I would recommend the venice 3200 for the proc.

well... considering the cheapest dual core AMD cpu is around $580 and 2gb of good RAM is going to cost you at least $300, you may want to find some more money or lower your expectations

Dual core or dual CPU is $2000 for the caliber of machine you're looking at. I know, I just built one (dual 246). I got an awesome deal from Dak on the core components too.

Iwill might still make those Zmax-DP SFF dual Opteron barebones machines but I've never seen them sold anywhere. No idea what the price is either.

how do you like the dual opterons I am getting a server setup from the AMD road show next week and cannot what to get that setup.

If you have the money go with Dual Core, if not get a 939 Asus board and a 3400+ or higher depending on budget. I would go with Raptop SATA HDs for the OS, with another larget SATA for storage.

What are you looking to do with it? That can help to figure out your Ram requirements.

Dual Opterons is about not having to wait for anything, ever. It is about knowing that the CPU isn't the bottleneck. It is really fast.

The difference is pretty obvious when you go from using dual Opterons to using someone else's computer. I built a 1U dual Opteron server for my place of business and it greatly exceeds our expectations so far.

The next part is a repost from a different thread; my boss gave me a $1000 budget to get him some workstations for our place of business (engineering) and this is what I came up with:

since Dual core or Dual CPU may be out of reach, have you considered (dare I say it) a P4 with hyperthreading? the multitasking ability is still there, and you won't be that much slower than an A64 in games...

I'm sure the prices are bound to fall in the next couple months, right? I'd really like a dual system, never had one of my own before. I could spend some more money, but I figured $1000 was alot as is without the graphics card. To be honest it seems building these things on your own is starting to cost as much as buying them prebuilt from Dell. :shakehead

Either way, I'll just spend the money so I can get exactly what I want this time. Something that will last a year without upgrades. I ill also want a RAID ) array :D

All I have to say about this is if you *hypothetically* went this route, get either the 3.2 or 3.4 northwood "C" socket 478 cpu. I don't think Intel has made a better cpu than that. The 3.4's are rare and I have only found them in OEM that is why I say 3.2 or 3.4.

It costs MORE, Dells can easily be bought for $299 and eMachines I have seen go for less than $30 more. And this is with monitor, speakers, printer, mouse, keyboard, and all. Of course you just don't get the quality or upgradability, but still, they are so nicely priced, (especially for folding & secondary basic pcs)

I have had RAID arrays going for years and recently switched to just usung dedicated drives for different things and so far I am not regretting it. I also don't worry about data loss as much any more, even though I have always been big on keeping current backups. You may want to express why you feel you want to do raid.

With these Dual Core X2's will I need registered RAM or what?

mtgoat- Yeah, I used to have RAID arrays on every system I built, but when I needed to give a hard drive to my parents becuase their system needed one, I never went back becuase I didn't feel it was worth it. If I do go with a raid array, it'll only be becuase I felt like spending even more :D

Opteron single and dual core: registered RAM.
Athlon single and dual core: unbuffered RAM.

    EDIT:// Clarified.

Sorry I don't understand you're point. With an X2 will I need Registered RAM?
  • TheBaronTheBaron Austin, TX
    edited June 2005
no, you won't need registered ram with an X2, just regular old DDR (get some TCCD!!!)

here's the thing about dells though, you are getting exactly what you pay for. you get ****ty value ram with really loose timings, a p4 system with a cheap motherboard without much customizability... I mean I'm sure you can put together a comparable system (maybe not with the sale prices, but retail sure)

I know what I am getting with a Dell, it was only one company name amoung many I could have chosen like Alienware.

Thanks for the answer on the RAM though, but I am unsure how or where to get TCCD RAM, I thought I read that they stopped making that stuff.

i think you should wait and see if/when the amd x2's become cheaper in 2-3 months (hopefully) with the release of a 3200+/3000+ series.

if you have to have something now, you could go fo the pentum d 820 for cheap @ the egg. will need a new mobo though. i think ati xpress 200 supports dual core. somethng like this and you could still use tccd ddr...

My current rig is the following...

    MSI K8T NEO FIS2R
MSI 9800 Radeon Pro(w/ XT core OC'd to near XT speeds)
    AMD Athlon Socket 754 3000+ 2GHz(running 2.1GHz)
    1GB Kingston HyperX DDR @ 2-2-2-6 420MHz
    Lian Li PC65 Case
    TTGI 520W PSU

It's a decent setup, but I'm pretty much stuck with the socket 754 with this setup as I bought it when Socket 754 was SUPPOSED to be the future, but then they dumped it for Socket 939.

Not to knock Intel or anything, but for a gaming rig, I want AMD becuase it just seems to play better IMHO for my needs. If I were buying a setup for running 3Ds Max, then I'd buy a Dual Intel rig.

I think that if I could find a SFF Barebones rig which I could have SLI in I'd go for that. ATM I am thinking that I will be willing to spend $2000 TOTAL on everything including a single graphics card in about 2 to 3 months. Not for OCing or anything, just so I can take it with me to lan Parties and such. Then when I get the money to buy another card, I could run SLI.
