Hacktool.Rootkit help, Please?

Hey everyone.... Nice forum. Looks like I may have found a home.

If anyone has time, please look at the HJT log below:

Recently my NortonAV found hacktool.rootkit on my home computer and was unable to fix it. I quarantined two files, but something is still preventing me from from logging on to the internet (via cablemodem). Norton site stated that with hacktool.rootkit, someone has likely taken complete control over my computer.... Sounds bad to me.

all was normal just two days ago, then, BAM. I don't have firewall, but apparently I need one. I'm new to computer viruses, as I haven't had many before so I haven't had to mess with them.

I am using my work computer to post this since I can't log on to the net at home. I have found another post or two regarding the removal of hacktool.rootkit, but apparently every HJT log is different and requires different handling. I basically don't want to screw anything up... :(

Anyway, thanks in advance for reading and really thanks if you can help me out.

    You have some entries there that need removing.

    ===============

    Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

    Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

    ===============

    Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

    1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

    xpjava.exe*

    2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

    Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\xpjava.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,xpjava.exe

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

    O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

    Now, with all windows closed (including Internet Explorer) except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\xpjava.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Let me know how everything goes.

    First of all, thank you for responding with such a detailed post.

    I did everything you requested.

    1. Moved HJT to its own folder
    2. Searched for xpjava.exe files - Found 0
    3. Ran HJT, Killed xpjava.exe
    4. Ran scan and fixed the 11 items you requested
    5. Searched for c:\Windows\system32\xpjava.exe - didn't find it, even with all hidden files viewable
    6. rebooted in safe mode, still found no xpjava.exe file
    7. Rebooted, ran HJT, and here's my new log file...

    UPDATE:::> So far, so good as far as my internet working again.

    Please check my log file, crunchie, and let me know if everything still seems ok.

    My computer was awful slow to start up, but I figured it had something to do with the Hijackthis program cleaning up my sh**.

    Thanks again, and if I need to do anything else.. please let me know.

    Norton Antivirus is currently scanning, but found nothing on startup, like it usually did...

    I'll post back after my scan is done to verify that nothing else was detected!

    CastleCops is pretty slow :D. If you want to continue with the help there, that's ok with me. I help there too :).

    Thanks for the link Crunchie. It saved me the time to search the CC site for my post!

    I'll try the Norton suggestions as well as what LonnyRJones suggested as well over at Castlecops. Regardless, I hope I didn't offend anyone by posting on two different sites. I figure the more suggestions I got, the better chance I will have of getting it fixed.

    Regardless, I'll be in close contact until I get this thing fixed... ;)

    Thanks again...

    Not offended as I probably would look where I could for an answer too. It is better though to be up front and mention that you have also posted at another site, for all concerned :). There is no confusion about possible missing log entries then.

    To prevent confusion, I'm taking crunchie's recommendation and directing you to my other post on Castlecops site so no there is no confusion on my rootkit problem and the fixes that I've tried....

    Computer is clean now, and I apologize again for posting on two sites. I should never have combined the two posts, as I can see how it can get very confusing (for me mostly)..

    Thanks Crunchie, for your help. I do apreciate it.

    I'll see you around no doubt. I've got a laptop that is full of crap... but that's another problem I'll deal with soon enough...
