Everything on PC changed by itself! Pls Help

I had to post here, as although the pc seems to be working ok, I have never seen happen what has happened, and am scared as to why it has...
System specs: Vaio NVidia G-Force Pentium 4 PC, 3.3 Ghz, XP Home, 200 gb serial partitioned hard drive, NIS 2005, adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy,Windows Cleanup! I am very maticulous with security, have scanned my HD, to find no viruses, used adaware, and spybot, but found nothing.
I switched on this morning, to find that everything on the machine has changed!
The first thing I noticed was that 3/4 of my desktop items had disappeared, including Outlook Express, and my start menu layout had been reset back to the easy access default one, rather than my choice of 'Classic Start Menu'.
I had a notice telling me that 'unused desktop items' needed to cleaned up, but ignored that, and had a look at my start menu.
All programs which have missing desktop shortcuts are working fine, but the PC looks to be reacting as though it is being used for the first time, with firewall notices asking me whether i'd like to accept or block programs, and all my e-mails and my email account, and other identity have been deleted!!! Aswell some of the contents of 'My Documents'...!?
I am slightly worried, as I downloaded Bitlord a few weeks ago to download a large collection of music loops, and have since heard nasty things about p2p software. Is this the cause, and if so, how should I safely delete all remnants of p2p files/reg instances? I need to get to the bottom of this, and make sure I have not either a)been hijacked, b) the PC have restored to a last known working config, or c) I have some horrible trojan eating my mobo..
The only other change to my system is Microsoft Beta Spyware protection, which I downloaded a few days ago. Could this have done this?

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE
Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):
C:\Program Files\Ghwsmeb
psc8thk.exe
Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.
