problems starting windows 98

When I try to start Windows 98 it goes straight to DOS and a message comes up:
Type the name oof the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
C>

does anyone know how to fix this?

    is this a recent install of win98? or is it an old install?
