drive overheating - > problems?

I have two drives that sit in a "cage" inside my computer. It is a fairly enclosed space. I came back today after leaving my computer on for a while to find my computer at a black screen:

Press f1 to retry, press f2 to enter setup

retrying does nothing, setup shows that all of my IDE devices (both channels, 2 optical drives and 2 HD's) are "unknown devices". Is it possible that the drives overheating are causing them problems?

Yes do you have a fan or cooling system for the "CAGE"

and you do have airflow space in your "CAGE" right?

It's just a metal rack ...there's about 3/4ths of an inch of space between the drives where they sit on the rails but very little airflow...there's no place to mount a fan.

For now I have fixed (I think) the problem by putting drive #2 in an external enclosure. F'ing Dells...just one more reason to chuck the damn thing.

Many Dell dssktop PC's have terrible airflow and kill way more drives then other makes. They strive for SILENT computers and do so often at the expense of heat in the case.
