OK, System is P4 2GB
256MB ram
GE Force FX5200
XP with SP2

System goes very very slow and will reboot at random times
The system restore doesnt work - it says it cant restore to that point (tried numerous points)
Turned System restore off and problem seemed to be fixed?
Turned System retore on to check something and was immediately booted into reboot

There are numerous error reports on start up, so many that i had to turn off error reporting just to be able to use the PC.

I have run antispyware and anti virus and all say the machine is clean.

Memtest ran for 70 passes without problems

CPU temp is a steady 52, minimal fluctuations - so it is not heat relatedproblem

I have taken a Hijack this log - I dont think it is a spyware or trojan - so someone may see something in it that may be a problem!

I have no idea where to go from here!

The fact that turning System Restore off and on seems to affect the computer leads me to think it might be wise to check the HD.

Right-click on the drive letter, left-click properties, go to the "Tools" tab, click "Check Now", put a checkmark in both boxes, then click start. After a few seconds it will tell you that it can't run right now and offer to run at the next noot. Say yes, reboot, then let her rip.

Those are memory errors. Could be a bad memory stick or a failing HD like Prof said. Run Memtest86+ and see if you get any errors. If not, it's probably the HD.

    Get Memtest86+ here http://www.short-media.com/download.php?dc=58

Here's what MS suggests you try. They even have a hotfix specifically for this issue.

What DocGeo said about memory is correct as well. It could even be a problem with the memory on the video card itself. (I'm still looking for a way to test that...)

If I'm reading it right, they are updating (or maybe modifying) the Dxg.sys file. It might be worth it to click Start>>Run then type in dxdiag and see what you get.

I'd seen that too Prof but I assumed he already had the patch since SP2 was installed on his machine. :o

As for the memory on the video... If he has on board video he could pull the GE Force card and see if he still has the problems. Am I correct on this??

You might be absolutely right. It wasn't clear to me from reading the MS info page whether the hotfix was included in SP2, or was a patch specifically for this situation.

That would be a great idea. Even w/o onboard video it might be worth a try to swap the card out with something else.

A video driver uninstall/reinstall might be in order, too. Siggy, if you're game for that I would suggest cleaning out the old drivers with a tool like NVCleaner. :)

Thanks again guys, I will try the above and get back to you.

I am not sure about the video card being the problem as the problem was there before we installed the card! But I am at the stage of trying anything!

thank you again for the help
