    I don't know what XP style you're using, but try to revert back to the default blue and green one.

    i've tried changing back- i've disabled stylexp, i've returned to the defalt style and still no go.

    i reckon its something to do with teh taskbar registry entry (if there is one?? - im a linux user by trade and know not of these things)

    you might also try to check for spyware and/or viruses. If there's nothing there and you have XP Pro, then you could run a repair install to get things back to normal. You can't do a repair install with XP home though.

    you start the computer from the cd and then pick a repair install, not the first time it asks you though, the second. It will not get rid of any of your programs, maybe your settings. basically it re-installs windows and you'll have to run windows update and reinstall all the MS updates. It'll still be YOUR windows install, but just minus all the updates that MS put out.

    Hi!

    Try this:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
    "NoViewContextMenu"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoViewContextMenu"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoSetTaskbar"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    "NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

    I wonder.. Would anything here help.... Windows XP File Association Fixes
    Be careful using them.
    I'm not sure what file association it would fall under.

    Have you tried starting in Safe Mode, then right click taskbar and set properties on it?
    Just throwing a couple ideas out there, since you seem stuck on it.

    erm.. i dont know when to press delete or whatever it is- my computer just seems to take literally one second between the grub prompt and windows login
    so theres never enough time

    will try the fixes though

    When it starts up just hold delete down, You'll get a few beep,beep, beeps, but it will get to bios. Won't hurt anything.

    repair install does NOT reinstall windows. it restores the System Files to how they were originally, without changing any settings, documents, or programs on your hd.
