I'm using a SCV Cable modem with a router, and i'm facing 2 annoying problems. 1, whenever the other computer connected to the router is on, my download rates on BitTorrent seem to go all the way down from 40kbps to 0-4kbps. How can I solve this problem?? 2, i've been wanting to play games online using IP addresses to connect with my friend, but we just can't seem to connect with the IP addresses assigned to us. I know my PC is part of a LAN, so the router automatically gives me a LAN IP address, but if that's the case, how can i find the proper IP for my friend to connect to mine?

Using a home router, you need to either setup your PC in the DMZ of the router (so that all unsolicited requests to the router go to your machine, this will completely negate the security benefit your router offers you), or you need to manually open up the ports that the game uses on your router (called manual forwarding most of the time), and set it so that every time your friend tries to connect to your external IP address ( http://www.whatismyip.com/ ) it's forwarded to your computer.

If you're not comfortable with this, do some googling on the terms I've used, preferably the port forwarding, not the DMZing of your machine. Look for things relevant to your router. Good luck.
