No sound while playing games

I have a problem, when im playing games like half life and far cry my sound would randomly go out.

I have to restart to get the sound back. Also when I turn on my pc, at the start up theres a beep sound, is that normal?

I have sound but it just randomly goes out when i am playing games.
I have a Realtek AC'97 Audio
and my graphics card is GeForce Fx5200

    if you are using an external speaker perhaps the wiring has been tampered with this would also explain the beep. If it's an internal sound system i am not sure what you should do about that maybe take your pc to pc world and have it checked out or an electronics store to have checked the beep doesn't sound good
