How do I keep msmsg.exe from running. I run Winows XP and when I cancel it or disable it using program like WinPatrol it still runs? Thanks.

    Hit start -> Run.
    Type MSconfig
    Hit the startup tab.
    Uncheck "msmsgs"
    Hit okay, and reboot.

    Done.

    Run Windows Messenger, go to Tools -> Options -> Preferences. Uncheck "Run this program when Windows Starts".

    If it still comes back after that, go to the SVT Forum and post a HijackThis log. There are viruses which masquerade as msmsg.exe. :cool:

    you can also find msmsg.exe in your program files/messenger dir, and rename it to something else so that it can't be called upon startup.

    i called mine msmsgssucks.exe... :thumbsup:

    You could simply un install it, go to ad remove programs and click the "Add Remove Windows Components" icon and uncheck the Windows Messenger then click next.

    Thx very much theseus... My issue was that I actually WANTED Windows Messenger to run (as a way to get around firewall issues in Remote Assistance), and I found that somewhere along the line I had enabled this option ( since I don't want it to run all the time ). Anyway, you saved me a lot of time posting... :)
