Freezing Win98

My mother was so impressed by the help I've received here from everyone... that now she wants me to help fix hers. Blargh. Here goes.
For the past couple of weeks, the computer has been having freezing problems. It's about 4 years old to the best of my recollection, and still runs 98. I can't seem to isolate what's causing the problem.
Sometimes it freezes after the intial Win98 screen, when there's just a flashing cursor. Sometimes it'll bring up the desktop and start a few programs then freeze. Sometimes it'll be running fine and randomly something attached will stop working, like the mouse/keyboard/monitor. Sometimes it works fine. It's a roll of the dice, really. Sometimes it'll start up fine on the first try, sometimes we go through 7-8 versions of the above scenarios before it finally calms down enough to work correctly.
Only thing I've known to do is toy with the programs that run on startup and that's not made much difference; I also defragged for the hell of it.
Any ideas?
