Do you anonomize?

edited September 2003 in Science & Tech
Due to recent RIAA actions, it seems to be in one's intrest to use anonymization to make yourself harder to track.

I've read of Freenet, which supposedly acts as a proxy, anonymization yourself ina manner which makes trhe RIAA's action's futile. Does anyone know anything about it? (http://freenet.sourceforge.net/)

    Just don't share any files using P2P and you shouldn't have a problem.

    People seem to be so quick to throw out that idea. Lets get everyone to stop sharing....... oh dear, there went P2P......

    Yeah, absolutely, if you download you should share! Just use Kazaa K++ Lite, and you should be fine from the RIAA.

    However, it's nice to know there are extra/possible alternatives starting to appear to make it harder for people to track your P2P activities.

    I'm not 100% sure it was Freenet but my friend who tries these things said that it was very slow and didn't work very well. Like the file would have to go through every person in a chain to hide the real source.

    Yeah, I anonymize. I turn filesharing off, and use the newest version of K++. There are plenty of other people out there willing to share and ignore security, but I'm not one of them. It entirely depends upon what P2P source I'm using.

    eDonkey, I share.
    K++, I don't.
    Hotline, I share.
    DC++, I share.
    Bearshare, I don't.

    etc.

    precisely. especially since RIAA won't come after software piracy, so bittorrent and overnet are especially safe.

    In my experience anonymous proxys are extremely slow.

    Like Spinner says, the newest version of k++ is supposed to hide you from IP adresses that the RIAA uses (I think thats how it works anyways). But whos to say the RIAA just doesnt start using different IPs from a different ISP.

    I think Bit Torrent is a pretty good solution because supposedly the info that the RIAA wants cannot be tracked.

    Anonymouse proxys would work though if you find a fast one. But typically those have to be scanned for. Or you can find lists of them in the underscene. But the ones on the lists are usually full real quick.

    But if you use those other solutions definately share. If they keep coming up with new p2p that works, the RIAA may be forced to give up this nonsense.
