Xampp

Ok at the suggestion of the Short one (ie Mr Shorty :) )
I installed the xampp package so that I can run a test server and dbase on my home rig.

Up until about a week ago it worked fine. I shut it down for a few days and when I went restart it, it would not start.

I tried all sorts of things. I tried changing the firewall settings, ports, everything that I know to do... (which is really about 3 or 4 things... LOL)

So I decided to just try and install and configure, what a mistake that was... huge learning curve there... , Apache, PHP, and MySQL by just down loading the files from open source and loading them up.

First I tried just Apache and I didn't get anything but I thought maybe I just needed to install PHP too... well the instructions to configure that with the Apache install went right over my head... so I decided to go bak to looking in to testing just apache again and still nothing...

The little monitor thing says that it is running and in my windows task manager it shows it as running. but when I type the "localhost" or 127.0.01 in my browser I get a "page can not be displayed"

So I go back to my origional xampp installation and redeploy the package and bam... I get the same problem...

I have gone into my network settings and tried disableing the XP Firewall then rebooting, all I get that way is a faster responce to "page can not be displayed" lol I went into my firewall settings and set up the ports as it was mentioned to do in the instructions but still nothing...

So what do I try next?

I'm at a loss and its getting frustrating :(

After an uninstall and reinstall of xampp I get the following:

At the bottom of my browser it says "Web site found. Waiting for reply..."

It just sits there and sits there. I never comes up.

    Hope that helps.

Ok here are some images of the situation.

    s1.gif

Here you can see that Mysql says that it is not connected
and that it is not connecting. I can leave it that way for hours.

    s2.gif

Here is a pic that shows that I followed the instructions.

    s3.gif

Here is what happends when I try to bring up a web page.

    s4.gif

Here is a little shot of my explorer showing the installed directories and stuff...

Hope that helps, I know that I'm not getting any responces from the "friends of Apache" forum... :rolleyes

This is driving me baty... I would really like to get this up so that I beta test my own vb board.... Thanks.

If I need to add any more screen shots of things so that its eaiser to see let me know I can do it... :)

When u start them both, check the task manager to make sure both the MYSQL and apache daemons are running :)

If this fails, make sure you have deleted any instances of apache, mysql and PHP. Use the search in Windows to make sure they are gone. Sounds like you have conflicting installs.

Delete your entire minixampp installation and redownload it from scratch. Check it installs and using the test page. If the test page does not show, then Im not sure what the hell is the reason. It's wierd.

Also, try http://localhost (without the trailing slash I see lurking in the shot above). Im sorry for my late reply, Im having real serious home ISP problems :(

Let me know what happens with this lot here, then we start probing deeper into your Windows install.

Here is an image of the processes that are running.

I will try and clean out all of the stuff and DNL everything and install it again.

Would it be harder to just install apache, mysql and php by them selves and configre them?

Geuss the main problem right now is just getting my system or browser to connect the server.

    Thanks,

I've had some of the same problems when I was messing around with apache, php, and mysql.

    I'm using the follow versions:
    apache 2.0.45
    php 4.3.2
    mysql 4.0.14b

They seem to be working fine. Installing and configuring them seperatly is really easy and it takes very little time.

Dig out your httpd.conf file and attach it :) Maybe something is screwed up in your apache setup.

    Here ya go. :)

Seems kinda like a system/browser/network thing.

I can ping it just fine.

But if I turn off the firewall on my nic the browser speedly displays "The page cannot be displayed"

At the bottom of the page it says "Cannot find server or DNS Error
    Internet Explorer"

So even though the apache processes are running the system dosen't know that there is a server running for "localhost" or 127.0.0.1

But if I turn back on the firewall on my nic the browser never gets to the "The page cannot be displayed" at least not with out waiting for a long, long time, like more than a hour...

I have gone in and set up the ports in my firewall connection so that requests can be made from the ports that both apache and mysql uses...

There's certainly nothing out of the ordinary in your apache config. It is really wierd

Apart from totally removing ALL instances of Xammp, Im not sure what to suggest. I did notice in that screenshot, that you have several versions there. Are you running IIS as well?

No, I'm only running just the one... I noticed that everytime I start apache it runs 2 instances, not sure if thats cause of the dual tihng or not...

No, just running the one server....

I have removed the xampp and all of its files and folders several times now... not sure what to do now...?

I did post at friends of apache but doubt I'll get a reply... seems like a dead forum...

    Thanks anyway,

Well after looking at the apache logs there was nothing in them.

    Crazy stuff...

How can I make sure that my port settings are proper and that its not a browser problem?

Ok I wonder if I have stumbled onto something...
On a whim I installed netscape for 2 reasons to try to connect to my server through it and also as another browser to test in.

Upon trying to connect I get the message from Netscapes alert as
"The connection was refused when attempting to contact 127.0.0.1"

So I wonder if my computer is blocking the access to the server somehow.
How can I figure that out and then configure my rig so that the server access is available?

Port settings dont matter at this stage.

Are you using a firewall at all?

Just the built in firewall for XP.
But when I turn it off it dosen't make any difference.
    It still won't connect.

FYI, The current Apache 2.x Releases are not compatible with McAfee 7.0 Virus Scan software.

I uninstalled 2.047 and installed 1.38 now I have no problems...

I got the advice from here

    Documented by McAfee here

Sucks I hope that they can get this fixed soon...

Now I guess I have to configure the whole thing my self now... Oh boy this should be fun... :rolleyes2

    Thanks,

    Nice one McAfee

Well at least you have an idea what is causing your problem. Any chance you can use a different virus product?

    Don't suppose you wanna..

/me stops before he suggests dualboot Linux...

Ok I've installed apachw 1.38, php, and MySQL

The server is working. I get the welcome to apache screen.

But that is the problem now....

I can't figure out how to make it look for the default web page that I want.

I went and change the default root to z:/local/website

It worked partly as I get an index directory of all of the pages and files in there.

I'll up load my .conf file maybe you can tell me what I missed.

Also I'll add some screen shots.

    thanks,

Ok as you can see this is a little snippet from explorer showing
my directory structure.... As you can see I have set up a folder
z:/local/website that is where I want my site to go to by default.
But changing the .conf to that gives me an ftp look to things...

    s7.gif

Which you can see by this clip.

    s8.gif

This is what I get if I use the defualt .conf file....

Don't know what to look for now...

In the appache config file (httpd.conf) scroll down to the block that says.....

    < IfModule mod_dir.c >
    DirectoryIndex index.html
    < /IfModule >

    and change it to...

    < IfModule mod_dir.c >
    DirectoryIndex index.htm
    < /IfModule >

    (basically change index.html to index.htm)

To test to see if PHP is working is quite simple, if you already have any PHP pages just use those but it you dont then make a plain text document with the following in it.....
<?php
    phpinfo();
    ?>
and save it, then rename it to something like "test.php" and try and open it like it is a page on your site (make sure the file is in your sites directory). If it worked then you will get lots of info about your PHP setup, if not then it will just look like you are reading a text file.
