WinChat

I'm trying to setup and run WinChat on my LAN. I made sure both the Network DDE and Network DSDM services we're running. Both we're disabled but I set them to automatic and started the service. I ran WinChat which was located in the Windows/System32 folder and Dialed to the computer upstairs which I had remote desktoped to for the test. I received a message saying "The other computer did not respond". WinChat had been running on the second box. Both computers are running Windows XP. What am I doing wrong?

Are the windows XP firewall(s) turned off?

One of the two computers was running the Windows firewall but I turned it off for the experiment. But I didn't reboot after turning it off. That wouldn't matter would it? Thanks so much for your help, really.

I tried setting it up on my own network and it doesn't work either, even with the proper services disabled. My guess is it's a piece of crap from 1992.

Why not just use MSN messenger or something like that?

Well I use AIM but I thought rather than firing up AIM to communicate with my bro who lives upstairs it might be simpler to use WinChat. Also I'm not sure WinChat would be required to be running in order to send messages which would be convenient.

*edit: I actually use the Gaim client BTW but the AIM network, not that it's important.

Darn! Been trying to get winchat to work for a while...Oh Well!

Been using Fomine NetSend for a few months, which is pretty decent.

I tried NetSend but it doesn't really allow for conversation per say, and it requires that the messenger service be running. But I'll see if it comes in use in the next couple weeks. Thanks.

Sorry, my mistake. Should have mentioned that messenger service needs to be enabled.

I came across Network Messenger but havn't tried it as of yet. Its not free but you get a 30 day trial.

Well, if you do find something better than please let me know :)

I have the same problem with winchat.
I have 2 computers running win xp pro sp2 connected in a workgroup through "SpeedTouch 580" ADSL modem/router.
Any firewall on my system is turned off.
Network DDE service is set to start automatically with windows.
It worked once by chance but never worked again after I logged off.

    Has anyone solved this problem.

I don't want to use any other program, It's a challenge with myself to use winchat per say.

    so, any ideas?

Now I can run winchat with the previously mentioned hardware.

I discovered that the problem was in the network DDE & network DSDM
servises on the computer that would receive the call. although they are
set to automatically start with windows, they don't function properly
unless I restart them manually each time I log in to my user account.
Then, if another user wants to use it after I log off, he/she will need
to restart the both services in order to be able to receive calls.

Any one knows how can I solve this problem with Network DDE and Network
    DSDM services?
I want to be able to receive calls since the startup of my system
without the need to restart the mentioned services manually each time I
log in, as well as different users can receive calls any time they log
in without the need to restart the services each time any user logs in.
