Install Network Printer on Linux

edited July 2005 in Science & Tech
I'm a newbie( just few days ago using this great OS)
I'm having trouble in installing printer network.
I'm connecting my Linux installed PC to printer through windows based network.
How to set it up ?

Share printer on Windows machine unless it is a printer with a network card in it and is directly on network and not hooked to a PC.

Run CUPS (if it has drivers for your printer). The call to CUPS is: https://127.0.0.1:631/ from a browser. You might have to set up a user ID for CUPS, but if it asks you for a PW and user right away use root aas user, then your root PW.

Let it find printer-- then print a test page.

    Done, if the above works.

In my experience if a Windows PC is sharing a local printer (ie, attached to the PC) and you want to use it from Linux, you'll need to install a Samba client. Samba is the real name for the technology powering Windows File and Printer Sharing. The Samba howto should be fairly helpful in configuring it after you get it installed.

I haven't tried using just CUPS before, I'll try that next time it's an issue.

    CUPS does not need Samba.
