Please Help!!!

My name is Cortnei Brown and I am experiencing some trouble on my computer with the W32.desktophijack virus. I did follow Symantec instructions on removal using the registry but not all of the things they said to look for were there and unfortunately I am still have trouble. I have downloaded the Hijackthis scan and here is the copy of the log:

Any help at all with this would be wonderful as my computer is a vital part of my everyday life...I use it for schooling and cannot proceed any further with my schooling until this virus is removed. If I have done anything incorrectly with the Hijackthis scan please let me know as well as how to correct it and I will be happy to do so....I'm desperate to get this fixed. Thank you very much!

    Lets get rid of HSA first.

    Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

    Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

    ===============

    Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
    Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

    ===============

    Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Do not run the reg fix yet.

    ===============

    Download CWShredder 2.15 from here. Do not run yet.

    Download AboutBuster 5:

    Once downloaded, unzip it, and put the folder on your desktop. Then double-click on the AboutBuster icon to start the program.

    Click Update. This will start updating AboutBuster with the latest definition database.

    Once it's done updating and you see that dialog, click Ok.

    Close AboutBuster.

    Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

    Start AboutBuster and click Begin Removal.

    When the scan is done, click Ok.

    ========

    Run CWShredder and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

    ========

    Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
    Save the logfile from the scan.

    ========

    Close all browser windows. Double click on the fixme.reg file to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

    ========

    Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

    Hi, I have followed instructions the download and updates with "ewido". Now I am a bit confused and wanted to consult with you before I proceeded any further so as not to mess things up. The following statement copied from your instructions is where I am stuck.....

    "Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Do not run the reg fix yet"

    I did not see an attached zip file. Is it supposed to be attached to the ewido file or am I supposed to be looking elsewhere?

    Just a quick note, I did a search on my computer for the infected file that Norton keeps popping up with and when I pulled it up it would not let me delete but I did scan it with EWIDO and it said no objects found in that file. Don't know if that's useful in anyway or not but just thought I should let you know.

    Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

    Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
    Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

    Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
    Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

    If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

    Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
    Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

    Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
    Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

    The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


    Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

    Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

    Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
    Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
    Let us know if any problems persist.

    Download CWShredder 2.15 from here.

    Download\'SpSeHjfix\' to the desktop and then
    right click a blank part of the desktop and select new folder, call it spfix
    unzip the file into that folder.

    Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
    Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
    When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
    The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

    If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

    Run the shredder and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

    Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

    Hi! I am so sorry to be a pain but I ran into some trouble while trying to run the Panda Active Scan. It says that Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support the repair feature. So what do I do now? Do I proceed without doing that particular scan?

    You can either temporarly disable Norton, or just skip the scan. I would prefer the scan to be run though :). It could reveal some more info.

    Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, I got called out of town unexpectedly. Anyway, yesterday I uninstalled the Norton and Aluria and installed AVG from Grisoft and will be installing some panda software shortly. I scanned with the Avg and deleted the viruses detected, then rescanned to make sure they were gone.     Well it seems as though I didn't copy the full log on yesterdays scan and I don't know if there is anyway to retrieve it, but you do have the complete log of the most current scan. Please let me know what you think, if it appears to you that everything is the way it should be.

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

    Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.


    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    For XP users.
    After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
    To flush the XP system Restore Points.

    Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

    When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
    On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

    Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

    Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

    Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
