Installing new operating system on home computer

I'm in the process of trying to re-install an operating system after having some major problems with a virus that destroyed the last one.

If you could please give me a step-by-step walkthrough of how to install the operating system, that would be greatly appreciated. I've done it before on my own computer, but want to make sure I have a step-by-step process to follow.
