Windows XP problem with Graphics and Sound

edited July 2005 in Hardware
Hi, I've recently encountered a problem with win xp where now I get no sound and the desktop display looks like windows 98. It happened when I began going through processes that were running and ending certain processes that appeared to be slowing down my computer. Now everytime I start up I have no sound and the desktop, taskbar and start menu look like windows 98.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing my graphics and sound drivers, without success. I've also tried changing the display and start menu settings but again I couldn't get it right.

Any ideas?

My system config:
Soltek SL75KAV Mainboard
Athlon XP 2400+
1024Mb SDRAM PC133
nVidia GeForce FX5200 128Mb Graphics
Creative Soundblaster Audigy LS
Windows XP Pro with SP2

Thanks in advance!

    Reformat.

    Also try Windows Restore.

Do you get sound during games, playing mp3's. etc?

If the only things you've lost are the Windows event sounds, it "sounds" like you've disabled the Themes Service. That would explain the Win98-ish appearance as well.

Another thing you may have possibly done is that you have bumped your performance options down to "Adjust for best performance". That kills all the eye-candy too.
