Why only 3DNow?

I've got Folding running on my sister's PC that I built for her a while ago. It was too slow, so a few months ago I put an XP1700+ TBred-A chip in it. I have the console running as a service with firedaemon on XP Pro.

It's version 3.25 of the client. I am using -forceasm.

In the log, it shows that -advmethods -forceasm and -service are the parameters I've used.

It also says it's version 1.49 of the Gromacs core.

It says "Assembly optimizations manually forced on."

Now, get this. It only says "Extra 3DNow! boost OK."

WHY isn't it running SSE, and what can I do to make it do so? :banghead:

    Try this,

Download client again. Delete core and let it download again. Take it from there.

Try those and tell us what happens. It should be running Extra SSE boost.

could it be windows not recognizing the cpu properly??

Windows recognizes it as an XP1700+... when I get home tonight if my sister is not asleep I'll try that... I really hope it works.

No wonder this thing isn't really turning in decent points!

I tried it. It didn't work... stopped F@H, deleted Console and core_78. Re-downloaded console. Started it up... it downloaded the core. Then said 3DNow boost OK.

I want SSE, dammit. Is there something wrong with the SiS 730S chipset that makes SSE unusable or something?

Here is exactly what the log file says:
    [03:31:36] Folding@home Gromacs Core
    [03:31:36] Version 1.49 (June 23, 2003)
    [03:31:36]
    [03:31:36] Preparing to commence simulation
[03:31:36] - Assembly optimizations manually forced on.
[03:31:38] - Not checking prior termination.
    [03:31:38] - Expanded 318909 -> 1861225 (decompressed 583.6 percent)
    [03:31:38]
    [03:31:38] Project: 810 (Run 4, Clone 0, Gen 0)
    [03:31:38]
[03:31:38] Assembly optimizations on if available.
    [03:31:38] Entering M.D.
    [03:31:59] (Starting from checkpoint)
    [03:31:59] Protein: p810_p53dimer810

    [03:31:59] Completed 115000 out of 500000 steps (23)
    [03:31:59] Extra 3DNow boost OK.

    Why:
[03:31:36] - Assembly optimizations manually forced on.
    AND:
[03:31:38] Assembly optimizations on if available.

Dude this beats me. Maybe a search in the folding community.

I get something similar. I have an Athlon XP 1600+.

Can I force it to use SSE using the Console version rather than the Windows one?

-forceasm on the 3.25 version client (client or graphical) SHOULD force SSE.

    BUT IT'S NOT!?!

Go to the Beta downloads section, download the 3.25 client. Rename it to FAH3Console.exe or whatever, then run it with -forceasm in the command line and SSE should be forced. I hope your luck with it is better than mine.

I managed to get the Windows client running with the SSE boost by running ti from the command line like this:
    >winFAH.exe -forceasm

I know this is stupid, but how do I make the startup shortcut to folding have the -forceasm on it?

Is this right in the shortcut?

My "Target" link reads like this:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\A253316\Desktop\FaH\FAH3Console.EXE" -forceasm

I renamed the 3.25 graphical client to "FAH3Console.exe" in my FaH directory, and it works like a charm.

Cool, mine works fine with SSE now. The only thing that worries me is that I've had this machine folding 12 hours a day for the last 3 weeks with the 3DNow boost rather than the SSE one!!!

Can anyone give me a figure on how that has been wasted?!

It's better not to think about your opportunity loss, Cyrix. Don't even try to calculate it or you'll cry. Like me with the sister's PC. :shakehead

Does WCPUID show that your cpu has SSE enabled?
  • GHoosdumGHoosdum Icrontian
    edited September 2003
WCPUID says SSE "Not Supported" ... but it's an XP1700+, it's supposed to have SSE, correct?

Also, WuG... I reinstalled windows. WCPUID STILL says SSE Not Supported. Now I have to run Windows Update on it all day again. Thanks! :nudge:

Oh, yeah... and how do I fix it!?!?

    try this:

    http://www.myplc.com/sony/sse_enabling_and_wcpuid.htm

it worked for my morgan duron that was having this problem

    Uhh... that simple, eh?
Yes, it worked! Thanks, shwaip. :vimp:

BTW, is that the Morgan Duron I sold you that had the problem?
