WHEN WE FIRST reviewed the Athlon 64 X2 processor a few months back, we said that it was an outstanding CPU, but we wished out loud for AMD to start selling a 2GHz version of the X2 at a lower price. After all, we argued, Intel's Pentium D 820 is a killer deal at just under $250, while the least expensive Athlon 64 X2 costs over twice that. Sure, the X2's performance might well justify the price premium, but we'll take more for our money when we can get it.

Today, our wish is fulfilled in the form of the Athlon 64 X2 3800+, a dual-core processor running at 2GHz with 512K of L2 cache per core. AMD has priced this baby at $354—significantly less than any of its other dual-core products. It doesn't take a Ph.D. in computer engineering to figure out that the X2 3800+ ought to offer a very potent combo of price and performance.
The Dual Core X2 3800+ does surprisingly well compared to the higher clocked single core 3500+ & 3800+ even when using supposedly single threaded programs.

Hi, First time poster acually got here by way of doing a search for I belive it was "awesome SLI screensaver" ...ended up reading about folding....(in a short article )

Now i'm running my new system (4 days old)...I have it folding for #93..

    mb-Asus A8n-sli delux
    proc- AMD64 x2 3800+
1 gig of some ram i got for 40 bucks from a friend.
and a Nvida 6800 thd PCI-E vid card.

    -
My old system finally melted after being overclocked for about 3 years for playing an old FPS game (tribes2)

-Anyway- new to the site...new to folding...new to hands on overclocking...

what's the best approach to ocing this system while keeping it stable?
I set up the non graphic folder as a service...according to taskmanager my cpu utilzation is never going higher that 50%,
I'm gone for much of the day- How can i assure it kicks up to oh say 90% folding when I'm not around?
-can i shut down folding if I have a critical app session...say a FPS tourney match? - How?
    - My stats show I'm useing 1 cpu....does a duel core count as 1?
-Are all my off topic questions gettiung annoying yet?
    -howabout now? :wtf:
-seriously though- How do i begin a sentance without useing the -?
    - nevermind i think i figured it out...
    Wo0t I'm r33t now!

thanks for any and all advice, sorry for picking your thread, you just got in the way.

BTW i plan to begin recruiting all my teammembers for #93 as soon as i understand with some level of not stupidness what I'm talking about

If this is better off moved to someother area, that's cool, but could you let me know where? (venz.dirge (at) gmail.com )
    (wifes calling me...)

    be well.

You have 2 Physical cores so you need to run 2 clients. Make another folder IE FAH2 or something and place the downloaded exe in that folder. When its asking for all the options say yes to advanced options. Then later it will ask for a machine ID, put 2 since it will be the second client on that computer. That will make it get a separate Work Unit(WU) from the servers. That will make the CPU run at 100% load.

There is no real easy way to just change the CPU utilization on the fly. You can stop the clients via the services page and edit the client.cfg file but thats not really recommended. I would just make sure that its ok folding at 100% all the time and it will be ok when you are not home. Mine never gets really warm at all at full load, its a 3200+ but its still the same concept.

You can go to Run->Services.msc and find the 2 FAH services and stop them there if you want but just dont forget to restart the clients when you are done playing. FAH wont affect your game anyway. It will give up resources instantly to any program that needs it because FAH runs at a lower priority than any other program.

Adding the second client will make the stats show 2 Active CPUs since you phyically have 2 cores.

I will have someone move your particular post (and my reply) to the FAH section of Short-Media.

Send them here if they have any questions, I or anyone else would be glad to answer any questions you have about FAH.

As far as the Overclocking part...that would be best posted in the Overclocking forum.:)
