Southbridge?

Just wondering, i dont know why but it randomly came to me, but what does the northbridge of a motherboard do. I mean it gets hot (its the thing with the heatsink on it right?), so I'm guessing it is kinda a mini integrated processor or something. Just thought I'd ask before I forget about it.

It allows for data to be transmitted from other devices across the motherboard to other devices. The top Blue chip is the Northbridge and the one below it is the Southbridge.
