updated mozilla and it all went downhill.....

edited August 2005 in Science & Tech
Hey guys I need a hand. I have mozilla firefox 1.0 and recently tried to update to the newer version, well the download went well and I was able to get the program going but I was not able to get on the net. Somehow my settings must have got all screwed up and now I have no internet at all, including using internet explorer. DOes anyone have any ideas on what to do? The computer was on a network of sort, but all my other computers are still working, so I don't know what the problem is. I have since deleted mozilla (I LOST ALL MY BOOKMARKS!!!) and tried to reinstall but still am having no luck. Where does mozilla save your bookmarks when you make them anyways? I have never been able to find them to back em up. Please help!

    mozilla/firefox bookmarks are kept in:

    C:\documents and settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\random string\bookmarks.html

its a hidden directory. You have to unhide all files first..

what operating system are you using?

I found the favorites, I am using windows xp and no firewall. I can also see that when I check the status of the connection I am both sending and recieving, so what would be causing the net not to work on that computer?

click on start and then run, and type CMD, and when the window popped up type ipconfig and tell us what the IP address u are getting.

alright, here is what I have:

    Windows IP Configuration

    Host name: DAVE

    Primary DNS suffix: (blank)

    Node type: Unknown

    IP Routing Enabled: NO

    Ethernet Adapter local area connection

    Connection specific DNS Suffix: (blank)

Description: 3 Com Etherlink XL 10/100 PCI FX NIC (3C905B-TX)

    Physical Address: 00-50-04-A9-DD-63

    DHCP Enabled: YES

    Autoconfiguration Enabled: YES

    Autoconfiguration Address: 169.254.134.22

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

    Default Gateway: (Blank)

    WINS Proxy enabled: NO

Upon comparing these results to the other computers I can see I have a problem, the question is how do I fix it? The IP address should be very close to the others except for the last few digits right? for example it should be 192.168.123._ _ _ I am sure someone on here knows how to fix this from here? I tried releasing and renewing it but that didn't work.

Another question, is it safe to tell your ip address or should that be kept private?

    1. your machine is not picking up an ipaddress from the dhcp server. Thats evident by the 169.x.x.x address. Means windows sees a network and a such but is getting nothing from the dhcp server.

    2. no gateway but your not talking with the dhcp server.

uninstall the nic in windows and reinstall it. You could also try just updating the drivers. Im guess that there is something slightly a miss in da windows networking setup for that card.

as for your ipaddress.. 192.168.x.x is a lan address and not routable via the internet. Its safe to state it. Mine on this laptop is 192.168.100.188 that address is worthless unless you have the WAN address...

    g'luck

Gobbles- thanks for the help, I am confident of the fact that I do not have the drivers for the network card (thats what you're refering to when you say "nic" right?) My question then is without the drivers and without an internet connection how can I update it? Or do I just uninstall and reinstall it hoping that windows has a driver? If you could tell me how to do that it would be much appreciated, I have done it a few times but don't really recall how I did it.

WinXP should have no trouble finding a driver for your NIC (Network Interface Card).

Are you using a router? That could explain your IP Address. Check the Properties for your Internet connection. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties. Make sure it's set like the attached picture - unless your ISP assigns a static IP Address, in which case it should be set to the one they give you.

Can it find a driver when its not connected to the internet though? I checked on the driver version and went to the etherlink site, I do in fact have the latest version. The device manager is also telling me that the device is working properly. ALso, I checked the internet protocol stuff, everything is as appears in your attachment... What is the deal here?

Windows will find the driver in it's stash of them it keeps on your hard drive.

Deleting and reinstalling the NIC will force Windows to reconfigure your Network settings, hopefully solving the problem. If that doesn't work we can try other measures. :)

I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it, and guess what? no luck. Perhaps now would be the time to try those "other measures..." Please help.

What type of Internet connection do you have (Cable, DSL, etc)?

Are you using a router or any type of Internet Connection Sharing?
  • edited August 2005
i have cable net and yes I am using a router, all the other computers plugged into the router are currently working just fine. I was told by comcast that it was a software problem with the network card because it is not renewing its ip address. it remains that stupid 168 number instead of giving me the 192 number that it should have if it is on a network. So I tried to install the driver off of the etherlink website and I still am having no luck.

absolutely wrong, don't correct me if you don't know what you're talking about

to be fair, it works either way

i got a different NIC and still no luck. WHen I do an ipconfig /renew I cannot renew the ip address, it says something about it being an invalid socket.... ? COuld that be a problem of sort?

We might be getting somewhere.

Try going here and getting the Winsock Fix Tool. See if that helps.

If that still doesn't do it, try hooking the computer in question directly to your cable modem, reboot, then try again.

Dumb question time, but have you tried a different network cable?

profdlp- that did the trick, kind of... My instant messenger is working and the status of the lan is showing an ip address and a default gateway, for some reason explorer is not working though. I am going to try to put mozilla on it and see if that works. Just when you thought you had this solved.... Don't worry there is more to come...

Is your antivirus stuff up to date? There are some known bugs which mess around with your Winsock settings.

Not with XP Pro SP2 here--- I DID try it your way and got an error that it could not find ipconfig/all but ipconfig /all works fine. SP2 plus updates issue??? Maybe.

I tried it that way on every machine I own, with no problems. I also have first hand experience with it working that way on SP1 down. anyway, why wouldn't you be running SP2 with all updates?

Just for the record, each way works for me. But, let's get back to the business at hand and get our man sailinstud420 back on the 'Net. ;)

sailinstud420, have you used any Internet "speed-up" tweaks lately? Some of them can inadvertently bork your Windows Network settings.

You might also want to run several different Spyware scans. You can find a couple of good ones in our Security Download section. A trip to the Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum might be a good idea. They'll tell you exactly how to make sure your machine is clean.

Since you were able to get at least partial Internet access, I think Firefox is definitely worth a try. If you can get on the Internet with that you'll have narrowed it down to being an IE problem.

If all else fails, there's always the trusty Repair Install. Just yell if you need help doing that. :)

I am still not having any luck with IE. Certain other things on the net don't seem to be working either, For example part manuals and literature that requires the use of adobe, as well as some small video files and such, I think I am missing some plugins or something. I also do not have sp2, I have tried several times to download it, but everytime I get this dumb stuff that claims that my xp isn't a real version. I have that same problem when I try to get updates. I have also heard that updates are not always worth downloading and that they just bog down your computer, is that true? And no I have not used any kind of internet speed up stuff or any other strange programs.

As far as virus stuff goes, is there any one specific program you would recommend? (preferably free) I was using zone alarm for a while but it drove me crazy, everything was being blocked and you have it asking you permission all the time. What do you guys think of mozilla? I have heard that the newer IE versions have tabbed windows, (which is the main reason I use firefox) Is one any safer or more secure to use then the other? I would just as well use IE if it did everything i wanted it to. Last but not least, is there any specific threads you would point me towards to check my machine and make sure it is virus free? I have more other computer problems but I have to work for a living too, I can hardly find time to post read and then try to fix the problem, lol.
