5.02 console version hangs up sometimes.

One of my folding computers is an Abit BP6 dual CPU. 2 533 Mhz Celerons at 600 Mhz, 768 MB RAM, maxed out.

I run Windows 2000 Pro on it and folding 5.02 console version.

Usually it folds fine, but every now and then (about every 2 months), it'll start to mess up. A work unit will take MUCH longer than it should by days or a week or 2, or a work unit won't be sent to the folding server.

The only real solution has been to shut down folding, delete ALL the folding stuff off the computer, and start over again.

Since it's a dual CPU motherboard, I want to be able to run 2 seperate instances of folding. Now I'm running one 5.03 graphical on it, which uses some power from both CPUs. Running only one 5.03 graphical on it is only using half its power.

Is this something that happens in 5.02 or what can I do to easily fix it if it happens again?

I dont know what would cause it to stop working after several months. I have run the same client on computers for much longer with no problem. There have been times I have not even looked at the computer for months at a time and it was running happily the whole time.

Maybe have a copy right after 5.02 setup and copy it over when it has problems.

There are times when a server is down or a WU wont get sent back. Thats fairly common.

Do you have a log from when it happens? My guess would be some sort of instability that leads to a crash (F@H or system), which turns off SSE/whatever making the WUs take much longer.

Could be instability in the system. At 600 Mhz on 533 dual Celerons, I'm pushing this BP6 as hard as it can go. Perhaps lowering the FSB from 75 to 72 (576 Mhz) would help.

It also has one bulged capacitor on the board. I have a whole new set of higher rated better quality capacitors, but haven't gotten around to changing them yet.

That's exactly what happens to one of mine. F@H will run on the 'other'PC for months with no probs, but on mine? It's only when I check the log that I notice folding has restarted itself for some reason but SSE is not being used now. In fact 5 mins ago I rebooted to get SSE back. It's a pain if this happens late in the day and it runs all night without SSE. I think the prob is with foldng as when this happens there are no indications, no errors, nothing. I keep telling myself that when I catch it at the end of a WU that I'll uninstall folding and reinstall it.

You should change the caps before they take your board and CPUs.

If its bulging, te volts could be off causing the problem.

You probably don't need to uninstall + reinstall folding if it's happening repeatedly - you usually can just stop + restart the client. If you notice that it does it again, post a log, as it will be much easier to diagnose problems. It could be problems with memory (too tight of timings, or just a bad stick). I assume you're not overclocked.

It does it a lot with this particular WU. I noticed in the log it says another process, 456, may be a client? There is only one instance of folding in task manager. I checked this morning and the log is a mess. I've cut it down, removed some of the 'frame' entries to shorten it but here it is. Any help would be appriciated.

bothered - it looks like maybe the console is getting started again while it is previously running. A couple possibilities (guesses):

    - It's in a startup folder, so when someone logs on, it starts the console again, and causes the problem.
    - It's possibly installed as multiple clients.

if you can't find either of those, you could try the following:
stop the service using the administrative tools - service menu.
use the command line to config the client again using fah502-console.exe -configonly
it should prompt you to uninstall the service
make sure that there are no versions running using the task manager
now, copy the following files/folders to a new directory - name it something a little different.
    FAH502-console.exe
    queue.dat
work folder (except for the core78.sta file, if it is inside)

rename the old directory to something else - just making sure that it doesn't get started undesireably.

run the fah502-console.exe, reconfig everything as you like.

Thanks shwaip, I've a busy few days ahead. Drop off wife and Daughter, sis in law and niece by the seaside for a girly weekend, pick them up Monday. Get to Micro Direct for two new Coolermaster cases and rebuild both PCs. I think half my probs are because the cases I have can no longer keep the PCs cool enough, they did when the fastest CPU I had was a 1.4 Athlon.
I only ever see one instance of folding in task manager but I'll certainly check out all you suggestions when they're rebuilt.
    Cheers mate.
