error installing windows XP professional

edited August 2005 in Science & Tech
Hi, I am currently trying to upgrade to windows XP, but as I was doing so, I got this error message halfway through installation.

STOP: C0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image user32.dll is possibly corrupt.
The header checksum does not match the computer checksum.

I am currently running windows 98 SE...

Please help :)

    You might have spyware or a virus that is causing that error. Are you 100% certain your Win98 install is completely clean?

    Honestly, I highly recommend against an upgrade. I would definitely to a clean installation. I know it seems a nightmare to have to reinstall all your applications and settings, but the stability you gain will be worth it.

    Thanks.....I'm not really sure if I have a clean install of WIN98....but I do not have the WIN98 installation disks anymore..only have win XP professional, so I thought I would give it a shot. The reason I'm trying to install windows XP, is because I just bought an external hard drive, and I cannot get my computer to recognize the driver...I keep trying everying. But with my other computer with XP on it, it is automatically detected. How can I tell if I have a clean version of 98? I get error messages about a cfgmgr52.dll...and others...but I'm not sure how to fix it.

    Start by reading this. Then, post a HJT log in our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Forum. (That first thing I linked you to will tell you how to post a HJT log)

    :)
