Bring up task manager (Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and click Task Manager) and click the column header that says "CPU". What programs are taking up the processor percentage?
  • edited August 2005
Is there a program i can get all these programs list instead of tying every one of them?

Go to our Security Downloads area and get a copy of HijackThis. Save it in its own folder somewhere, run it, then post a log here. This will show all running processes and any rotten stuff which may have snuck in there. :)

I was kinda assuming only one or two things would actually be taking CPU time. What I meant was for you to just tell us which programs say anything other than "0" in that column.

Can you do what I said to do? That will tell us what is actually using the CPU time as opposed to what is running/installed... all you need to list is the ones that are taking up more than 0% CPU usage...

    Well here is a breakdown;

    Norton:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe

    Windows Services:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE (Windows Explorer)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe (Print Spooler)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fxssvc.exe (MS Fax)

    Misc Programs:
    C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe (WinAMP)
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer)
    C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe (WinRAR)
    C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.281\Hijac kThis.exe (HJT)
    C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE (Realtek Sound Manager)
    C:\Program Files\D-Tools\daemon.exe (Daemon Tools)
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\New Boundary\PrismXL\PRISMXL.SYS (Prism Deployment)

    Lexmark Printer:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE

All that Norton stuff running is probably using most of your RAM but when you're idling it shouldn't be using CPU time. One thing that does look curious though is that Prism thing, it looks like sort of software that allows you to remotely update someones machine. But regardless, we'll know what is causing it when you post what is taking up the CPU time on Task Manager.
  • edited August 2005
The system idle process is 77-99 all the time.
  • EnverexEnverex Worcester, UK Icrontian
    edited August 2005
Thats good, that is just a process that shows how much % ISN'T being used.
  • edited August 2005
Why is the CPU usage still around 50%
  • EnverexEnverex Worcester, UK Icrontian
    edited August 2005
Well if you actually did what I said and told me ALL of the things that are using processor time then I could tell you!
  • edited August 2005
The system idle process is the only one that doesnt say 00.
  • EnverexEnverex Worcester, UK Icrontian
    edited August 2005
Then your CPU usage isn't 50%, it's nothing. The only thing it could possibly be is throttling but that would disable itself when it needs to run faster anyway.
  • edited August 2005
Do u also have A64 3200+? are you happy with the speed?
can u help me with msconfig? I am not sure what services and programs to run at startup. My computer takes much longer than normal to startup.
  • edited August 2005
I restarted the machine after messing with msconfig. Now the CPU usage is 0%. But still when I am running many tasks its slow. especially when i m using ABC.

i have amd 2800 athlon, asus motherboard k8v-mx, 1 gig ram, and it going like unicorn, i think you have to format your HD partition, reinstall all softwares, except norton, try install antivirus came up with your motherboard. do that if it dosent go speed like F-14 fighter takeoff, i will tell you the other solution. dont buy any new hardware before you try my solutions.

It's most likely because you don't have enough RAM. All the Norton things running will be taking up a good chunk of it. Simply put, either run less stuff or buy more RAM, heh.

I didnt get antivirus software with this system. I am not sure if I should format HD because I just bought this system a month ago. Is buying RAM a better option? If I format HD should I go with XP pro or home ed.? What antivirus software should I use?

Uninstalling Norton is a huge PITA. Unless you have experience doing that, a format would likely be much simpler, especially on a system only a month old where you really haven't invested a lot of time in getting everything just so. I'd get rid of the McAfee Anit-Spyware, too, and just run a weekly (free) scan with bot Spybot and Ad-Aware. (Available at our Security Download page.) The fewer resource hogs you have running in the background the more of your computer is left for you to use.
Is buying RAM a better option?
In you case, yes. If I were to spend money on this system that is what I would spend it on.
If I format HD should I go with XP pro or home ed.?
Home is just fine. 99.9% of the people in the world don't need Pro.
What antivirus software should I use?
AVG Free Edition is great. It's free (duh!), uses little in the way of system resources, and does the job.
