CHKDSK Won't go Away!

edited August 2005 in Science & Tech
Pretty much everytime I reboot, Windows XP Pro send me through the CHKDSK routine. This is after shutting down and/or rebooting normally. What would cause this and how do I stop it!?

get the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool and run it to see if the drive is physically okay.

Back up your data immediately, just as a precaution.

    Must have been at icrontic....

Anyways, there is a bug in XP where if you try to run checkdisk with the auto fix error switch (dont remember actual command, or verbage) it will say it has to dismount the disk, and can only do that on bootup. It will but it will not flag whatever its supposed to flag as done, so it does it EVERY time. Its so annoying.

If you just try getting the "do you want Windows to run a chkdisk next time it boots?" prompt, and this time answer "no" and it should deflag it as not having to run.

I've never gotten a prompt. Windows shuts down normally. The chkdsk routine starts early during POST I believe, runs and then reboots itself.

Even though windows shuts down OK, the chkdsk screen says windows was not shut down properly and chkdsk needs to run. You can escape out of the chkdsk OK, but it's still annoying.

Do this, go to ‘my computer’, right click your c: drive and choose properties. Go to tools tab. Click the ‘Check Now…’. Make sure bothe checkboxes are checked. It will ask if its ok to run check disk on the next boot up. Tell it NO. Than reboot. That sould fix your problem.

Let me know if it works.
