what brand/model laptop - on my IBM here I still have to press F12 to select boot device regardless of the entry in BIOS

Other laptops sometimes need you to hold down a key like "C" tp indicate you want the CD-ROM to boot.

Also is the new HDD being detected as well?

Check in the BIOS and make sure that the cdrom drive is set as the first boot device.

If your mention about F2 and F12 was because you can't get into the BIOS, try all the Fxx keys, along with the Delete key. What model laptop do you have?
