McAfee is the devil

edited August 2005 in Science & Tech
I always seem to be fixing computers with a little less knowledge than is required, so I'm looking for a little assistance.

My brother is running a Pentium II with very little ram, Win 98 and my mother tried to install the Privacy service on his computer. Problem is, when you go to log on to the service, the computer freezes.

Can't seem to get to DOS to try to rectify this problem (don't know if I know how to fix it that way anyway) and I'm currently running Knoppix (first time using Linux in any form) to get it to be functional. Thing is, I have no clue how to access what's on the hd while using Knoppix to get rid of the dratted McAffee. Any help would be much appreciated!

Try booting in Safe Mode w/ Win98 and delete it from there. Repeatedly tapping F8 as soon as you turn the computer on (before Windows begins to load) will get you to the boot options menu.

You might want to click Start>>Run and type in msconfig, then go to the startup tab and make sure there isn't anything leftover trying to run on startup. Just remove the check next to anything referencing McAfee.

    Good luck. :)

McAfee's Internet Security Suite can kill slower/ older systems. I had a customers PC... AMD Duron 900MHz with 256 MB of RAM, Windows XP and the customer installed Internet Security and the system stopped... but it was secure, no internet, no viruses, nothing... just hung the system.

I went into safe mode, tried to uninstall it, and failed since the application needed some services enabled in order to uninstall... so I disable a few things and then restarted, and uninstall the crap. The system then worked great...Too much for that system to handle....
