Major Workgroup Issue... HELP!
This company is getting irritated with me and neither me nor my boss can figure out what’s going on here is the scoop
They got a new machine (Dimension 3000) and want to get it set up with their eThomas Software.
How it was set up before
eThomas Server on one machine eThomas client on the other
Two machines both with 2000 Professional
Two computer on cat 5 crossover cable
Both computers set up on dynamic IP address with no router or hub between (they had what windows gives you 169. something)
Norton Security on the server machine but allowing the IP address through
I was able to see both computers in the workgroup until I installed the client version of eThomas and restarted. I then could not get the XP Professional system to see itself of the 2000 Professional system. (Would not give an error just not show any computers in their.
I can get the 2000 machine to see and access the windows XP Professional system but I can't get the XP Professional system to access the 2000 Professional system. The XP Professional system has no internet security on it.
Things I have tried:
Tried to set up as it was before but didn't work.
winSocketFix -nothing
Change workgroup from workgroup to Zeller from Workgroup
**This is when i was able to have the XP Professional system to see the 2000 Professional machine in the work group but not access. I would try to browse to the 2000 Professional system and no matter what user name and password I put it would say access is denied**
I disabled and enabled simple file sharing and didn't work
Ran home or small bus. network wizard to and didn't work
I added the user name and password to the 2000 Professional system and after rebooting to XP Professional system I could not even access the workgroup (access is denied and would not even ask for user name and pass)
I check permissions of the 2000 Professional system shared folders and it allows everyone to have full access. But I add the windows XP Professional system user name and pass and didn't work
Support of the software has got me no where. They claim that ANY server needs to have a higher operating system (i.e. a windows 98 print server will not work if you have windows XP on any of the system connected to it) what a bunch of idiots... They also claim that their eThomas Client software does NOTHING to the network settings. But after their previous statement I have troubles believe them. So i did a winSocket Fix, it didn't work but I changed the workgroup name to Zeller and they were finally able to at least see each other.

1) are these machines plugged up to a conventional network topology? (i.e. Gateway, switch/hub, computer)
2) Why are they using a crossover cable?
3) have you tried trying to use a router to deligate DHCP addresses? I had a problem similar to this in my network at home till I plugged everything into a router and let it do what XP was borking up.
4) Are you running any DNS or DHCP servers that may be assigning conflicting addresses?
5) As before, switch the computers to a different workgroup (I use our company name) then reboot all machines.
XP Professional - 192.168.1.100
2000 Profesional - 192.168.1.101
1. No just one machine to another, that’s the way it was setup when i got there. No hubs, routers, switches, nothing.
2. that’s the way they have it set up and it was working with the older machine
3. No I have no, very good idea. It will be tried tomorrow.
4. No
5. Will do again.
Keep them coming guys I really need to have this resolved tomorrow when I go in.
