It has been reported that AMD, is thinking about expanding its family of x86 based CPU's to fit an even broader range of computing devices.
The chipmaker will launch its Athlon64, a new high-performance processor for desktop and notebook PCs, next week. But it's already exploring offering even more chips based on the x86 processor architecture in an effort to win a wider range of customers, Hector Ruiz, AMD's CEO, said in an interview with CNET News.com.

AMD aims to employ what one might call an "x86 everywhere" strategy, under which it will expand the use of the x86 architecture, the basic design that underlies all of its PC chips and those from competitors Intel and VIA Technologies, Ruiz said.

According to IDC, the following is an accurate representation of the current breakdown of desktop & mobile processor market shares as of August 15, 2003:

    Desktop Processor Market Share:
    Intel: 79.4%
    AMD: 19.6%

    Mobile Processor Market Share:
    Intel: 88.1%
    AMD: 11.9%

    Intel is not in trouble.

It would be nice to see AMD making a competitive processor for handheld/PocketPC units, as I'm sure the cost of the XScale processor that's utilized in these units contribute to the high cost of the items. Competition is always a healthy thing, bringing newer technologies to consumers at more affordable prices.

Intel makes more in profit ($1 billion per quarter) than AMD has made in it's entire history combined! Sad but true.

It's Good to be the King.

But competiton is needed. If it wasn't for the Athlon we'ld all be taking about how fast our 1000 mhz P3s are, And dreaming about the New 1.4 ghz P4s (shudder)
