Firefox problem..

edited September 2005 in Science & Tech
Hi all,

I just bought a new pc and am wondering about two things.

First off, I have my homepage set to www.rr.com which is my isp home page. However, when it loads with firefox, in the bottom left hand corner, where it says transferring data, connecting to..etc etc. it says "read hercules.rr.com" Now, I'm not sure why it's saying that, but it said that before when I used firefox with my old setup. But with IE, I don't get that there...any ideas?

Also, I have windows media player 10 installed, but I can't seem to stream videos when I use Firefox...I like firefox alot, but it's making me not want to use it now..

The names in front of the rr.com are the names of the servers it is getting the various pieces of data that build the web page

when I load the page I see
    content.rr.com
    quantam.rr.com
    hercules.rr.com
    content.rr.com
and various other servers that are building the content your seeing..

I myself tend to use IE still for most things, namely alot of the admin tools I use are activeX based thus will not run in firefox, I also tend to not like the way it renders pages - but I do pop back to it now and then to see the improvements they are making and I use it on one of my home machines just so I am familiar with it.

The reason media player won't work is it uses activeX which firefox do not implement as it is a MS thing.

You need to add a plugin to support those type of apps - see

Ya know, I thought FF was supposed to be this uber safe browser...After I downloaded FF, I ran Spybot s+d and it came up with all these things like hit-box, advertising.com, avenue..When I expanded those entries, every single one of them came from firefox...sup with that?

That just sounds like cookies - not actual spyware

yeah those are tracking cookies that adware/spyware programs pick up, but theyre not really hazzardous. If you want less of those cookies, go Tools > Options > Privacy and change the settings.

those are cookies, like tcith said. They're not something "caused" by firefox - they come from the sites that you visit. If you don't want them, turn cookies off in firefox, but be prepared for a very annoying browsing experience as nothing is kept from page to another, like logins and things like that.

Hmm, I have FF 1.0.6..and the only active x plug in they have is for 1.0.4 So am i basically out of luck as far as streaming media on FF? Also, if the one for 1.0.4 works, do I just dl it, and that's it?

    Hey heatseeker.

About the "Transferring data from" issue: It is a known bug in firefox, actually in the gecko engine (the basis for almost all Mozilla browsers) that causes this. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39310
