Problems loading latest ATI drivers

I bought a Radeon X800 some time back. Installed the card and loaded the drivers and control center from the disk provided with the card, with no problems. The card has worked fine and has not given me a days problem.

However, as soon as I try to install a more recent downloaded driver I run into problems.

I uninstalled the existing drivers via device manager. After re-booting, windows automatically installed the generic drivers for the x800. So far no problem. I then installed the ATI catalyst drivers. ( I tried 5_6 and 5_7 both gave the same problems)The card still works fine afterwards, but when windows starts up, it tells me it has found new hardware and needs to install the drivers. After windows tries unsuccessfully to install the drivers, I just cancel the application. It shows up thereafter as an unknown device in device manager.

Every time I reboot it starts the same process of trying to find drivers for newly installed hardware. When I check my display adapters in device manager it shows the Radeon X800 and Radeon X800 secondry as installed with no conflicts.

I have tried deleting the unknown device to no avail. It just pops up again at every reboot. I obviously do not want to put up with this aggravation for the sake of an updated driver.

Can anyone help and maybe tell me if there is anything I am overlooking or doing wrong?

Uninstall everything with the included cleaner. Upon reboot after that, WIndoze tells you it have found a new hardware..press cancel on all those. Then just install the driver package and reboot when it tells you.

You refer to the included cleaner. Where do I find this cleaner?

I uninstalled everything with the cleaner I found on the original disk. I pressed cancel when windows tried to install drivers and proceeded to install the driver package as you suggested.

When the system rebooted it came up with the same message. Found new hardware.
When I look in device manager it shows the X800 driver installed under display adapters. However it is also showing an unknown device as before, so I am still sitting with the same problem.

    Any other suggestions?

Try the drivers with the old control panel instead of the new adn imo, terrible control center. http://www2.ati.com/drivers/5-8_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_25203.exe

Clean the old first as before though.

Im sorry but could you be a bit more specific.

I am unsure as to what you want me to try. Should I install the control panel that is on my disk? The cd is dated 2004 however I am unsure as to what driver version is installed on it.

Also what will I be downloading at the link you gave me. Is seems to be the very latest driver. I have already downloaded 5-8_xp although it is only the 10.7mb version.

Download what i linked to. It includes both the driver and the control panel. But remove everything you have installed first.

    Hi Mack

Thanks a million for your help so far. I have only just finished downloading the drivers and cc a few minutes ago. Will try re-installing with your recommendation a bit later and let you know how it goes. I will get back to you around this time tomorrow.

    Hi Mack

I loaded the file you suggested and am happy to report that everything is working perfectly. No more unknown hardware, no more conflicts.

    Thanks for your help.
