Xbox 360 to Use Infineon Security Chip

FormFactorFormFactor At the core of forgotten
edited September 2005 in Science & Tech
The Register is reporting that Microsoft will use an Infineon chip for security in its upcoming gaming console.

Microsoft may be looking to Infineon's TPM technology to provide comparable protection for the 360. Infineon's TPM 1.2 chip supports the Trusted Computing Group's trusted platform 1.2 specification, but it also delivers a variety of security features, including ACE with RSA support for 2048-bit keys, hardware acceleration for SHA-1 hashing, and support for Intel's upcoming LaGrande Technology.
Infineon said the security chip was "a custom implementation of Infineon’s proven authentication technology".

That comment is likely to refer to its Trusted Platform Module (TPM) - the chip which, incidentally, was located within Apple's developer-oriented Intel-based Power Macs and suggested as the foundation for Apple's scheme to stop PC owners installing Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware.

What happened with apple PM me.

As for the chip I hope they use something that keeps everyone from modding there 360s and playing anything on them.

They should do a global ban for people that modify the 360 with unotherized products. If they are trying to use them online. Not just ban the player's IP, game, and mac address but also the hardware. No cheaters every just like Punkbuster which does this for all games and it does not matter what game you cheated on(or modified the code.)

What about the people like me who bought a xbox just to mod. Granted I don't play any games on it but modding it let me watch divx xvid and play mp3's over the network.

If they were to ban people from modding the 360 then they are going to lose a lot of sales. I know a bunch of people who just bought a regular xbox just to mod it.

Each xbox they sell, they lose money. Having people only buy them to mod them is lose-lose. They make money through live subscriptions and games.

I bought and modded my xbox primarily for use as an entertainment center. I could care less if I'm banned from live or if microsoft looks down on me for it. I enjoyed the project, and now I can transfer divx movies over my network to my xbox, and watch it on my big screen.

    i won't buy a 360 until they're mod-able

I am sorry I ment for banning people from playing with the modded xbox online with multiplayer, so if any modifications came into play banned for life and you would have to by a new gamertag.

I didn't mean ban you for just using it to play DivX, mp3s, etc... But you probably won't have to mod it this time around since it comes with a lot of multimedia options including USB2.0 streaming, etc...

They should only BAN you if you try to connect to the internet with it not a local LAN. Because I was extremely mad when I found out that in a recent tournament I was in the opposing team had a modded XBOX, and well if you have to mod it to play online against someone (ranked) then you should be banned.

It doesn't matter what features it comes with. People will find a flaw in the protection and they will mod it and develop even better features. :)

Yep your right but hopefully the anti cheat software/hardware will upgrade itself automatically. or just have everything disabled when it connects to the internet. something like all modes disabled, hacks etc...

Would bring everything back to the defaults... to make it a fair online playing field...
