A workmate has a problem with a windows password. When his PC starts a box pops up saying his "password will expire in x days, do you want to change it now?" He doesn't know the password as it was set ages ago and he's forgoten it. I've had this box myself and I just keep setting it to the same one. How can I\we stop this updating password and what happens if the password does expire?

Start -> Settings -> Control panel -> users and passwords -> advanced tab -> advanced button -> Click users folder -> Find his user name -> Right click -> Properties -> Check password never expires.

    Problem solved.

If the password HAD expired, he would not have been able to log in.

When I get the "Password will expire in 21 days; would you like to change it now?" message, if I click "No" then it makes me change it anyway.

I really really hate the restrictions they place on the PCs here at work... I need Admin priviledges, man!

Cheers guys but, There isn't an advanced button or tab. Even in Users and passwords help it tells me to click advanced but there isn't one. Is there another way? There is a 'remove password' but you need the password to do it.

Is it a home machine or an network administrator-run machine (IE: Business)?

Well mine is a home PC, one of two on a home network. The only account on mine with a password is my own and I'm the admin.
My workmates is just the one home PC, Both are running XP Pro.
    Speedy responce Thrax, Thanks.

Depends how the OS is setup.
start->run "control userpasswords2" without the quotes.

a few days ago there was thread concerning software to audit the hardware and software on machines.

One of hte suggested programs boots from a CD and lets you set or re-set a password without knowing the old one.
    Mighty handy.
