\windows\system32\config\system error with a twist

right then

got the usual file is missing and use the system recovery type R

well ive done all this before and its worked

Anyway today a new twist happened

popped in my windows xp cd got to the screen, typed "R" it asked for my installation number i typed in 1 and then it just freezes, usually at this point it wud ask for the admin password but it just stays there

Any ideas i really need to get into my machine

    at some point, after several repair installs, I've found tat they just stop working. I'll suggest a format, although I'm sure thats not what you'd like to hear

    Can you do a repair install? i.e. will it make it past the option to enter the recovery console and make it all the way to the new/repair option? If so, I'd try that so as to keep my data.

    it just freezes at that point to mate, tried about 6 xp discs now
