Reuters reports that Sony is releasing a line of hard drive and flash memory based Walkman players to compete with the Apple iPod line.
The announcement comes hours after Apple unveiled the pencil-thin "iPod nano" digital player and a long-anticipated mobile phone that plays music in a bid to extend its domination of the market.

"Our previous models have been well accepted by customers in Japan and the United Kingdom. But we are not at all satisfied with where we are now," said Koichiro Tsujino, co-President of Connect, a Sony unit which makes portable music players and offers online music distribution services.

"I understand a certain company made an announcement earlier today. We will accelerate our challenge with these new models," he told a news conference.

go sony.. I'm tired of all these Ipods and namely apple. I hate how they think they are supperior to everything else...apple..get off the pcp...you all are normal...like everyone else.

I also hate it when there crap breaks or FAILS, and they act like its your fault. there battery last 18 months if its a good one and they'll replace it for a nominal fee of $100 i think it is. and all your files are gone,

The battery in my 3G 20GB iPod is still going strong after a few years. It played 192kbps mp3s for 7h,8m straight, far exceeding the 4h capacity of "defective" batteries. 7h is plenty for me as I only listen to it off and on for less than 1hr per day. If I notice it's getting low, I just put it in the dock overnight. For me personally, battery life isn't really an issue. It's not like I'm taking cross-country flights daily. Other companies continue to introduce products they claim is the "iPod killer" and they will continue to fail. I believe people like the iPod because of its simplicity, style, and intuitiveness. It's obviously not because it's packed with features like the majority of the competitors players. I haven't once thought "wow, I wish my iPod could ________". I bought it to listen to my mp3's, I didn't buy it to watch video, listen to the radio, play games, etc. etc.
