Pipex Gears Up For 24 Meg Broadband

UK ISP Pipex is gearing up to offer punters 24 meg broadband as part of their investment in local loop unbundling (LLU). The ISP, which had 215,000 broadband punters at the end of June, is to wire up 60 BT (British Telecom) exchanges to provide broadband direct to punters.
"We have selected those exchanges where we have at least 400 customers within 5kms of our core network, providing a payback within 24 months," said the ISP today. Investing in LLU means that Pipex should be able to save money, but it will also be only be able to offer new services and speeds of up to 24 meg.
In my opinion, Pipex are the number one BT infrastructure based internet service provider in the UK. They continue to successfully create a happy medium between their own growth and their customer’s needs and they have a customer support service that is second to none. I don't offer ringing endorsements often, but in this case it's deserved. Looking forward to LLU.

    Taken from the The English-to-American dictionary
    punter n. The nearest equivalent to an omnisex version of bloke. A punter is usually a customer of some sort, but this need not be the case. I believe that originally a punter was someone placing bets at a racecourse. However, as the language developed natural progression decreed that, as the greater proportion of the British public were susceptible to a flutter, it described almost all of us. However, because of the word's gambling roots, punters are regarded slightly warily and shouldn't be taken at face value. In the US, the punter is the member of an American Football team charged with punting the ball a decent distance.

    But its good to see some decent investment being put into UK broadband

    thinks of his 3Mb/s connection and is envious.

    Don't most cable ISPs have the ability to get us 100Mb/sec anyways? Why do they hold out? Bastards!

    Hmmm, I'm ~5km from the exchange, I wonder if with LLU that it would be possible to get over 1Mb... (I can JUST about get 1Mb at the moment).

    Think your right - COX Cable here in Tucson just upped the city to 9Mb downloads & 4Mb uploads. I just installed a new Motorola Surfboard cable modem (old one was 1st generation), all I can say is WOW! Never realized my modem was such a bottleneck till now.

    Why? Price or infrastructure?

    Infrastructure. Takes ages for anything to roll out here then it's only key places. Anywhere else they either don't care about or is out of range.

    Correction:

    I misread the Download/Upload speeds - Cox Tucson has 2 programs

    Prefered = 4Mbps Downloads/512kbps Uploads

    Premier = 9Mbps Downloads/1Mbps Uploads

    Sorry
