Dell Laptop problem

edited September 2005 in Hardware
Hi, I have a Dell 8500 laptop, and about 2 months ago it started freezing up about 15 minutes after start-up. What happens is that little black squares start appearing on the monitor and progressively more and more appear, then the whole thing just freezes. The only way to turn it off after that is to take out the battery. If I try and turn it back on immediately, then rows of colored lines appear on the monitor. If I let the computer sit for a bit, it will work again for about 15 minutes before the same thing happens. It seems as though as soon as the fan turned on, that's when the trouble would start, and after it had cooled, it would work again. But this problem has just gotten progressively worse, so now it happens after about 5 minutes. Just enough time to read a couple of emails. When I called Dell, they said it sounded like the motherboard needed to be replaced and that I should send it in to be replaced (for a total cost of around $800). No thanks.
Any suggestions?
