Folding Questions

Does anyone know what this page does with the Credit to Total to Team boxes? How do you use it? I thought it was a way to give a team points.

Credit

Also, I do shut down my home PC when I'm at work and use it heavy sometimes - which I think is puzzling the folding@home program. I say this because I got like 15 WUs but a score of 4 here. I had 3 WUs and 0 points, so I reinstalled but  . It does run without competition all night. Advice appreciated.

Thanks.

I guess the credit thing is just a search option.

As for the low points...you have some stability problems and FAH is crashing and not completing the Work Units. Go to your FAh directory and post the contents of hte log file here for us to look at.

Well first of all the box with your name is showing you your credits, total wu's probably and team number. It seems to me you are number one on team 0 with 1975 credits and possibly a total of 171 wu's?

Anyway it appears you are getting credits for you work.
As far as using your computer heavily there's nothing wrong with that ...I use mine that way all of the time. Whatever part of the processor isn't being used during those heavy sessions is still churning up folding power. You're processor is probably always utilised 100% whether it be by folding alone or folding + whatever else you are working with at the time.

    Does that help?

edit: Team 93 could sure use the help!:fold::csimon:

Thanks for replying (quickly too!). - here you go (I hope it's the one you want - I'm not familiar with hte?). If it isn't, let me know and I'll replace it. Also attached is my Team 93 score as I've seen it. The problem is like sometimes I do but most times I don't.

yeah that is your 93 score sorry for the miscommunication.

You may be getting errors ...can you post your FAHlog.txt?

Np. Done. Also, did you see the bottom of my previous post?

according to this everything is running just fine you just haven't completed the wu yet. Chances are this is a huge wu that takes some time to complete ...coupled with the fact that you turn off your system at night and use it heavily it could take some time to finish and turn in point but when it does it will produce a whammy.

If you've uninstalled and reinstalled as you said you may have lost the work in which you aren't given any points for. If you ever do that again I highly suggest you leave the work folder so you don't lose credits for your efforts.

If you have no other *.txt files in the folding folder then chances are you may have had errors and gotten few points for the small amount that had been completed. Without the log we can never know for sure.

It's not uncommon to experience errors if you're overclocking and/or overheating. Also various memory malfunctions will cause errors. This isn't to say you are having the errors since we have all the signs of a present healthy folding machine.

Did you set up as a service? If not how are you starting the client?

Chances are if you let this wu complete in it's own time you will get a few more points!

What processor are you using? Is it XP, P4, A64? Also how much ram and are you overclocking?

I was skeptical at first because I already feel suspicious of all the processes that load & soak up performance. I don't use screensavers. I even tried to get Norton Antivirus to look at windows messenger as a virus.

But F@H doesn't seem to bog anything down. I loaded it into the sever at work. It was fun seeing panic in the IT dept's eyes before they figured out what was soaking up all the slack on the CPU. They won't let people run it because "unproductive applications" software is uneccessarily exposing the system to potential elevated risk levels". And there is also the question of the extra energy costs used by a program that doesn't contribute to the profitabilty of the firm).

Our IS Director talks preeeety down he? Almost like a lawyer or a preecha or sumbpin'? He can't be an astro-not, because the other guys on the mission would have made the world a better place by leaving him on the moon

Athalon XP 3000 Barton with 1GB not OC'd.

It launches from the Startup Menu and loads as a service in background and runs basically full-time AFTER I log on.

Note: I elected not to run the no-nonsense console version so the family can see what's folding. Will probably go console later.

Thanks. Hope to rake in some decent points soon :D but ... but I think I'll save the rest of the introduction for another thread.

:: STILL wondering about those credit boxes ???. Does this mean we might be able to borrow a billion points or two??? :: ;D

Those boxes are search specification fields. You could use them (for example) to find all of the users with 1000 to 3000 points while also having 30 - 50 WUs.

Did you set it up as a service AND have a shortcut in the Startup folder? If so then its starting twice and causing the problems.
  • QeldromaQeldroma Arid ZoneAh Member
    edited September 2005
I did not do a single thing to set it up outside of what the installation program did.

Looks like I'm starting to post more points than WUs - although it's not a lot.

Will post my Task Manager services tab when I get home if you want -

I understand better now CB, thanks. It's just the way it is set-up and titled makes it appear to me to be something else entirely- and I get  easily.

Again, thanks for all the input.

Well it will make a shortcut or make a service, different versions can do one or the other.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but looking at QelDroma's stats, F@H has to be crashing on him.
QelDroma, would you mind posting your full F@H log.txt file again?
Granted, I've been away from running F@H for awhile, but I've never seen wu's finished with no points credited or single digit points posted, unless the program was crashing and restarting.
I just hate to see anyone folding and not being properly credited for their time spent.

I'm thinking that he has more than one instance installed ...in that case he would have more that one FAHlong.txt and the one we've seen if fine. I'd sure like to see the processes in task manager.

LPL is right- the log is looking strange- it's attached.

I think I will run this Memtest and Prime95 and see if anything turns up- will post results.

Yes, you have several "early end" and at least one "bad" unit in there.
Do you have your cpu overclocked? That's usually the culprit, but not always.
Other things could be heat problems or even memory?
  • csimoncsimon Acadiana Icrontian
    edited September 2005
yes memtest and give us your ambient and idle/load temps if possible.
  • QeldromaQeldroma Arid ZoneAh Member
    edited September 2005
Yeah. The diagnosis is not looking good. :(

    0. I'm not OC'd.
    1. Memtest passed 2x.
    2. I fired up Prime95 and it ran fine. Then I remembered to close F@H. When I did, Prime detected a hardware error and aborted. Started Prime up again and it ran fine until I closed a browser window and it did the same thing.
    3. I may have my CPU temp sensor going bad - it's reading 46C unloaded and 49C@100%. I have a ThermalTake SilentBoost HSF, but I don't remember it being THAT good. (My ambient is about 28C). I think I remember numbers more like 41-52.

First guess, CPU maybe mobo? Anyone? Maybe idea to narrow it down?

At this point, should I take this to the Hardware/Troublshoot Forum? Thanks. You guys

Dang, I just wanted to come and help Fold and check this place out- I didn't mean bring all this with me :-/

I should have taken pictures but didn't think of it.

I thought about it last night and opened my case and ran a vacuum nozzle through it. I let it Fold uninterrupted all night and the log says I actually got a WU done OK. I also had a decent change in points. But I couldn't let it go this morning when I saw it still had a problem loading and my CPU temperature sensor still seemed stuck.

I pulled my case and disassembled a lot of it- vacuuming away. My TT Silentboost is a good HSF, but because of how it is constructed, it is also good at hiding things under the fan. I pull the fan.

If you know what a dust bunny is, I found a warren of rabbits packed in the fins underneath the fan edges (dam, picture!)- which my money says was constricting both fan air flow and heat radiation. I pulled it out and blew/vacuumed it. I cleaned and reseated it to the CPU, brought it up, Memtested a pass and it's folding now. My temps look way more believable too, 38-47C.

Outlook is good. Again, thank you very much.

(mmonnin, everything with the word "log" in it in the Folding@Home folder that I can see is attached. Is there something else?).
  • mmonninmmonnin Centreville, VA

Well if you had a few dust bunnies in there it could have been overheating and causing the WUs to fail.

Are your temps better now and how are they?

    Actually, no. :)
    mmonnin wrote:

They look much more trustworthy now- 37(no load)-49C(100%) now as opposed to looking at 46-49C under any condition last night. I think my temp probe wasn't working right and the CPU might have been running much hotter than it was saying. I can't explain how, just what it did.

At any rate, the proof will be in the folding. Thanks for following up.
