Firefox install issues

This has happened on every machine I've installed Firefox on, and it's driving me nuts. Whenever I try to update Firefox to the latest version by running the installer, if I don't manually uninstall Firefox and restart the computer first, the Firefox install is borked, and gives me an error message when I try to start it (although I've just blanked on what the contents of the message were). So then I have to uninstall, restart, and install again.

Seems the only way to report bugs to Mozilla is to sign up on their forum, and I just don't feel like registering on another forum and trying to get everyone to believe the guy with the one post count. But this has got to be happening to lots of people if it's happened on so many different kinds of computers for me, right? This has been going on since at least version 1.0.0.

Incompatible or corrupt profile? Try installing from the zip file version (extract and overwrite)

The best luck I have had with install/upgrades of firefox has been to uninstall the old...then install the new and then update. The profiles are maintained within windows regardless of the uninstall.

I have tried installing, then updating, then installing a new version...only to be greeted with intermittent issues such as plug-in compatabilities, theme upgrades, extension updates, etc.
