Computer crashing often...ads pop up often...HJT log included. Please help!

edited September 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
First things first...I have run SpyBot and AdAware. There were some items that were removed/fixed. Here are my problems:

I use Firefox, and I still get pop-ups from IE. EDIT: This is with pop-up stopper running. They are usually related to pages that I am browsing (i.e., when I make a home mortgage payment I get a home loan pop-up).

Usually I can run multiple windows in Firefox, Windows Media Player, and another program (Hearts, Kazaa Lite, etc.) at the same time with no problems. Recently however, my computer crashes and I have to reboot.

When I normally run SpyBot and AdAware, there are a few items that, once they are removed, stay gone. Now, every time I run these two scans, they keep catching things that need to be removed. This makes me think that I have some spyware that keeps rearing its ugly head every time I start up.

EDIT: I'm also getting a 'low virtual memory' message from time to time. This may be fixed after I get rid of the spyware, but if you guys see any resource hogs let me know and I can get rid of them, too. Thanks!

Here's a copy of my HijackThis! log:

    Hi, sorry for the delay.

First, please uprade your version of HijackThis to the latest (1.99.1) - you can find it in our security downloads page. Post a new log with that version and we'll go from there. :)

I posted this in another part of the forum, and they said to ask over here, so I'll tack this on to the end of my original post...

I have a ton of things that run on startup. I know a lot of it is not essential, and some may even be unwanted. Here are a list of items that I see when I type in 'msconfig':

    vptray

    CMGrdian

    dpps2

    qttask

    realsched

    Logi_MwX

    SearchUpgrader

    hpcmpmgr

    HPWuSchd2

    wupdater

    RealPlay

    Belt

    DirectCD

    CREATE~1

    ctfmon

    Weather

    ypager

    msgked

    Adobe Reader Speed Launch

    HP Digital Imaging Monitor

    HP Image Zone Fast Start

    Microsoft Office

I was told that SearchUpgrader, wupdater, and msgked were bad. I know I'm already asking a lot, but if I could get help as to how to remove these and any other things that are uneccessary startup items I'd really appreciate it. Please let me know if I need to provide any more info to help you guys out.

    Thanks! :)

Prime, I hope its OK if I help :)

    Hi LaRock,

Check the following entries in HJT and then click 'Fix Checked'

    R3 - URLSearchHook: IncrediFindBHO Class - {0026AD90-C86F-4269-97F3-DAB4897C6D06} - C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\BHO\INCFIN~1.DLL (file missing)

Find and delete the files in highlighted - don't worry if they do noe exist:

    C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1
    C:\Program Files\Common files\SearchUpgrader

Post a new HJT log after :)

Thats right! SearchUpgrader, wupdater and msgked are spy/adware.

Can I ask, did you have anything disabled on startup when you created your HJT log? If so, then enable everything on startup and post a new HJT log after you have done the things i've asked in the previous message.

From the Items you listed, you really don't need any of them unless there is something you want, in which case you can leave it.

    Hope that helps :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I was able to get rid of the items on the first HJT log, and I deleted the files you listed.

Yes, I had disabled some of the startup items, so I enabled everything and ran a new HJT log. Here it is:

    A few things still there.

Open HJT and check the following entries and click 'Fix Checked'

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Belt] C:\WINDOWS\Belt.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updater] C:\Program Files\Common files\updater\wupdater.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskReg] C:\Program Files\KaZaA\Super Mario Bros 2.exe - I would strongly suggest that you remove Kazaa if its still on your computer
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msmc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msgked.exe - go here and follow the uninstall procedure
    O23 - Service: McAfee Firewall - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Firewall\CPD.EXE" /SERVICE (file missing)

Show Hidden Files and Folders - explained here and delete the highlighted items:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msgked.exe
    C:\Program Files\KaZaA\Super Mario Bros 2.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common files\SearchUpgrader\
    C:\Program Files\Common files\updater\wupdater.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Belt.exe

    download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    o Install background guard
o Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
o On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
o Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Now, scan with it.

Post a new HJT log after :)

Wow...that Ewido really found a lot of infected items!

Just a quick note: while running Ewido, I was playing Microsoft Hearts to pass the time. I got a "low virtual memory" message in my active icons tray. Then when I connected to the Internet (using Firefox) I got an IE popup warning me about possible spyware (I've received this popup often). So, I'm not sure if I missed something and I still have some spyware, or if I have to restart to get rid of all the spyware. I'm sure you'll be able to tell if I'm still infected by looking at the HJT Log.

Thanks again for all your help! And I uninstalled and deleted Kazaa as per your recommendation.

    Looking good :)

    Get rid of these two:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

yes, i know a lot of people like weatherbug, but it is considered spyware. If you must have it, skip that entry.

    After that, I think you're clean :)

I used weatherbug for a while (walking my dogs several times a day made me appreciate an accurate outside temperature reading), but eventually got sick and tired of the ads.

I found Weather Watcher to be an excellent free - and non-Spyware - alternative.

I'm the one who sent LaRock over here - thanks for helping him out, fellows.
