Windows XP Not Booting

edited September 2005 in Hardware
Hi

A friend has a Time computer with Windows Xp Media Centre

Problem 1 - no disks

Main problem

The computer fails to start even in safe mode or any mode.

He states the night before he was closing down and windows xp installed updates, on closure

The computer shows the black screen with the windows xp in the centre, then flickers to a blue screen with white writing closes down and reboots, starting the cycle again.

Loaded a windows 98 boot disk and roamed about in dos mode and seen that all the usual directories etc were present, including directories of photgraphs.

1 A checked the bios and loaded optimal settings - no difference.

2. Well in my wisdom I loaded a windows xp home disk, and launched the recovery mdule, ran chkdsk and got the result

The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.

3 Ran fixboot in the recovery consule, stated that it was succesful, rebooted and received the message ntldr is missing.

4 Ran the boot disk again and copied ntldr and ntdetect.com from the cd to c:

Still not start and when I load the 98 boot cd and roam in dos all that is visble is the ntldr and ntdetect files

have I lost everything - I really would apreciate anyway of getting these files back

Thanks

Davy C

Give TestDisk a try. It has saved many of us in the same situation. :)
