Packet.exe & comeula.dll

I'll start by saying I am well versed in malware removal techniques. The files of interest in the following log are Packet.exe and comeula.dll I removed the packet.exe file (by booting in safe mode - command prompt) but can't remove it's pointer. Both of these entries regenerate when you remove them, indicating something is running in the background still. I have tried malware scans with the following products:

NAV 2005
Ad-Aware 1.06r1
F-prot (from bootable CD after converting the FS to FAT32)
MS Anti-spyware
TDS-3 (Ref: 7-29-05)

comeula.dll is a Winlogon Notify entry. My research tells me this loads very early in the boot process. I've tried to address it with Killbox (delete on reboot & replace w/ dummy on reboot) but to no avail.

Has anyone fought this bug before?

Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called Windows Packet Driver. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

OK. Here's what cured it.

I finally remembered I had converted to FAT32, so I just booted back to my AV disk and manually deleted the file C:\Windows\Cursors\comeula.dll Upon reboot, Windows XP chkdsk'd the drive and discovered a problem with C:\Windows\Cursors\Alvemoc.ini2 I know this is new as I performed chkdsk /r on the volume prior to conversion to FAT. I suspect the .ini file played a part.

After deleting the file, I just booted to windows (normal mode), ran Hijackthis and deleted the entry.

To deal with Packet.exe I had to open regedit and search for all occurances of packet.exe I just deleted them at the root of their key and I found 2 occurances. A quick run of convert c: /FS:NTFS and this machine is now malware-free and back to normal.

Just an additional thought.

Had I been thinking, I could have deleted the file from recovery console (by booting to the XP or 2000 CDRom). The technique would have saved a few steps and not require owning a copy of Partition Magic. And it would work on server os's where PM doesn't.
