Help! I can't get work.

This is what I am getting on two machines that are on a network.
Eventually they get work and run fine.
Some days this persists for 4-6 hours. During that time I can't even ping the 'fah', even from a different machine.

Give me a clue, network settings?

Firewalls??? Are these two machines themselves trying to download something else or feed something to web at same time?? Limited Bandwidth available locally to my end at time to sync\hook-up with assignment servers has caused this for me on both Linux and Windows. It is worse on dialup, but even on Comcast I have had issues with Stanford's assignment servers up.
