Hard drive failure

I have a dell PC of a friends. I am working on hte Hard drive, It no longer recoginizes the drive. I am trying to atleast get it to recognize and boot so i can pull the info off andsave it. Any programs i can get ahold of and make this work I will be incredibly gratefull. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

    try mounting it in another computer. If it's still dead, you'll have to give it the Yoshi treatment.

    That means finding an exactly identical drive and swapping controller boards. Ask keebler why it's called the Yoshi treatment.
